Pete Sampras Tennis is a Sega Mega Drive tennis game developed by Zeppelin Games. Endorsed by celebrity tennis player Pete Sampras, the game was first published in the United States by Spectrum Holobyte in April 1994, and was published in Europe by Codemasters the following June. Pete Sampras Tennis is the first game to utilize Codemasters' proprietary J-Cart, allowing for four-player support without the need for an additional accessory. In Europe, versions lacking the J-cart were also produced, and sold at a reduced price.
Pete Sampras Tennis was ported to the Sega Game Gear courtesy of developer Big Red Software. First published in the United Kingdom by Codemasters in August 1994, it was brought to the United States the following November. Curiously, it appears Spectrum HoloByte was once set to publish the United States release, as logos for the company are visible on the rear of the game's box and manual. However, the logos have been purposefully concealed with stickers touting magazine review blurbs, indicating the change in publisher was made relatively late in production.
The game was followed by a 1995 sequel, Sampras Tennis 96.
History
Before Codemasters had signed celebrity tennis player Pete Sampras to endorse the title, the game was known by the name Tennis All-Stars.[9]
A Sega Master System version was planned for July 1994[10], but was ultimately cancelled for unknown reasons.
