Hanada tells Kiryu that a gang war between Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance is immiment.

Omi Alliance is a very powerful Yakuza organization in the Kansai area and since Tojo Clan is still recovering from the civil war from the last year, a war between two clans would be disasterous. Kiryu, who wants to leave his old life behind, rejects Hanada's request of assistance at first. Immadiately after they are attacked by men with guns. Hanada is gravely wounded and eventually dies in Hospital from his wounds. Realizing that everything in Tojo Clan, and by that extension, Kamuro-cho is in danger, Kiryu decides to act as a mediator between two families and travels to Osaka. Kiryu teams up with old friends and new allies to solve the mystery, such as Kaoru Sayama, a police detective from Sotenbori who keeps him under close watch.

Yakuza 2, known as Ryu ga Gotoku 2 (龍が如く2) in Japan, is an action game developed by New Entertainment R&D Dept. #1 and published by Sega for the PlayStation 2 as a direct sequel to Yakuza.

Story

Taking place nearly one year after events of Yakuza, Kazuma Kiryu leaves Kamurocho with his adopted daughter Haruka and lives in the outskirts of the city. During a visit to cemetery which he prays for his friends who lost their lives during the "10 Billion Yen" incident, Kiryu meets Hanada, who he let to take control of Tojo Clan at the end of the first game.

Realizing that everything in Tojo Clan, and by that extension, Kamurocho is in danger, Kiryu decides to act as a mediator between two families and travels to Osaka. Kiryu teams up with old friends and new allies to solve the mystery, such as Kaoru Sayama, a police detective from Sotenbori who keeps him under close watch.

Kiryu eventually realizes there is another group playing with both sides from the shadows and bring two clans to brink of war for their own reasons.

Kiryu's primary rival in this game is Ryuji Goda, son of the chariman of Omi Alliance and leader of Go-Ryu family. (He can be seen in the cover with Kiryu)

Game takes place in both Kamurocho and Sotenbori, another fictional district, this time modelled after Osaka.

History

Legacy

A big success in Japan, Yakuza 2 received positive reviews much like its predecessor, however some parts of the story were criticized for being xenophobic, particulary anti-Korean. The game was later re-released in Japan as part of "PlayStation 2 The Best" budget range on 6 December 2007 for ¥1,800 (1,890 inc. tax), and was remastered as part of the 2012 release of Ryu ga Gotoku 1&2 HD Edition.

For a while a Western release seemed unlikely as the original Yakuza failed to live up to expectations (not to mention declining support for the PlayStation 2 console as developers and consumers moved to its successors), however an English version emerged in late 2008, nearly two years after the Japanese version, potentially spurred on by fan petitions. Yakuza 2 sold adequately in the West - while not enough for Sega to part with spin-off Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan!, it appeared to justify the release of Yakuza 3 and Yakuza 4 in the years that followed.

Yuma Asami, a famous Japanese adult video star, shows up in the game as a hostess.
