− | + | PAGENAME is a Sega Saturn fighting game developed by Point of View. It is the second and final update to Mortal Kombat 3 (after Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3), released exclusively for consoles. It was first published in the United States by Midway Home Entertainment in August 1997, then subsequently published in Europe and Brazil by GT Interactive Software in April 1998. | |

+ | ==Story== | ||
+ | Weary of continuous losses in tournament battle, Shao Kahn, who lost to Liu Kang in the Outworld tournament in the previous game, enacts a 10,000-year-old plan. He would have his Shadow Priests, led by Shang Tsung, revive his former Queen Sindel, who unexpectedly died at a young age. However, she would not be revived in the Outworld, but in Earthrealm. This would allow Shao Kahn to cross the boundary lines and reclaim his queen. When Sindel is reincarnated in Earthrealm, Shao Kahn reaches across the dimensions to reclaim her, and as a result, Earthrealm gradually becomes a part of Outworld, stripping billions of their souls. Only a few are spared, protected by Rayden. He tells them that Shao Kahn must be stopped, but he cannot interfere; due to his status, he has no power in Outworld, and Earthrealm is partially merged with Outworld. Shao Kahn has unleashed extermination squads to kill any Earthrealm survivors. Rayden's protection only extends to the soul, not to the body, so his chosen warriors have to fight the extermination squads and repel Shao Kahn. | ||

+ | Mortal Kombat Trilogy features a similar basic gameplay system and the same story as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but it adds characters and stages restored from Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. Until the release of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon in 2006, this was the largest roster of fighters ever seen in a Mortal Kombat game. While the graphics for the returning fighters are partially updated (save for Johnny Cage who has an entirely new actor play the character), the bulk of their assets come from the older games and in many cases visually clash with the other characters. The game introduces the Aggressor bar, which fills as the combatants fight (twice as much if the opponent is blocking). Once the bar is filled, it grants the character fast movement and greater attack damage for a short period of time. The game also introduces the Brutality finishing move (also present in the 16-bit ports of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, released shortly before Trilogy), which consists of repeatedly attacking the opponent until they explode. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Many characters gained additional special moves. Some were simple edits of existing moves (such as Stryker throwing two grenades instead of one), while others were unused animations never implemented in their intended previous games. These special moves included Baraka's Blade Spin move, Rayden's Reverse Lightning, and Goro's Spinning Punch move. Sub-Zero's famous "Spine Rip" Fatality reappears in the game, but it is completely censored, as the screen blacks out to avoid having to re-animate the fatality for this game. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Characters move with left and right and crouch with down. They jump with up and flip back and forth with upleft and upright. All characters have punches and kicks that can either be aimed high or low. Characters perform a low punch with A, a high punch with X, a low kick with C, and a high kick with Z. Characters can run by holding B; they can only run forwards. The Run meter is drained both by running and by performing combos, but the meter replenishes quickly if not used for a second. Characters block by holding Y. Blocking can be done while standing or crouching. Some attacks cannot be blocked while standing (such as sweeps). All attacks do a small amount of damage even when blocked. | ||
+ | |||
+ | Most characters have two Fatalities, an Animality, a Friendship, a Babality, and a Brutality. To perform an Animality, the player must first perform a Mercy, which restores a tiny amount of the opponent's health bar after winning two rounds. Brutalities are 11-button combos that causes characters to rapidly beat on their opponents until they explode. All of the arenas that featured a stage-specific Fatality are featured in this game, except for the Pit II, since it required custom sprites for every character. | ||
+ | |||
+ | ===Modes=== | ||
+ | | ||
+ | In the main arcade mode, the player can choose any character. Then the player chooses a "tower" of opponents to face (Novice, Warrior, Master, or Champion), with the more difficult towers having more opponents. Every tower ends with an endurance match (or two endurance matches in the Champion tier) and two final matches against the bosses Motaro and Shao Kahn. In the endurance matches, which return from the first Mortal Kombat, the player must defeat two opponents in each round rather than only one. At any point during gameplay, a second player can challenge the first by pressing Start on a second control pad, with the winner continuing in the tournament. | ||
+ | |||
+ | There are also two multiplayer modes: a two-on-two mode and an eight-player tournament mode. In the two-on-two mode, two players choose two characters each and fight. After a character is eliminated, the player's second character jumps into the battle. A round is decided when both of a player's characters are defeated, and matches are played to the best of three rounds. The tournament mode is a bracketed tournament in which up to eight different players (with odd-numbered players using the first control pad and even-numbered players using the second control pad) can compete. Shao Kahn's Lost Treasures, which are ten selectable prizes, are introduced after either the main game or the eight-player tournament are completed. | ||
+ | |||
+ | The game has five difficulty settings for computer-controlled opponents (Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Very Hard). | ||
+ | |||
+ | ===Characters=== | ||
+ | | ||
+ | All characters can perform roundhouse kicks with left+HighKick (which knock the opponent across the screen), leg sweeps with left+LowKick (which cause the opponent to fall down), and uppercuts with down+HighPunch (which knock the opponent high into the air). Throws are performed by pressing LowPunch when next to the opponent. | ||
− | + | If the match goes to three rounds, players can offer defeated opponents Mercy as an alternative to a finishing move by pressing Run. This allows the other player to recover a sliver of health and continue fighting. | |
− | + | Fatalities often require being a certain distance from the opponent in order to execute. Each character has a special button combination for performing stage-specific Fatalities. Friendships and Babalities can only be performed if the player does not block during the final round. Animalities can only be performed if the player grants the opponent Mercy first. | |
+ | ====Playable==== | ||
+ | All of the characters from the previous Mortal Kombat games return and are playable without cheat codes, including the boss characters. The boss characters cannot crouch, run, or use finishing moves (and finishing moves cannot be used against them). | ||

+ | |||
+ | As in previous games, Shang Tsung can morph into any other character and use their moves, but morphs must be enabled in the options before they can be used. As morphing into characters generally imposes a load time, the player can choose to allow Shang Tsung to morph into anyone or only a limited number of characters. When "limited" is chosen, after selecting Shang Tsung, the player chooses two characters to morph into. Selecting one of the male, female, or cyborg ninjas also allows morphs for all of their palette swaps. With limited morphs, the player can always morph into Shang Tsung's opponent (and any palette swaps of that character). When "anyone" is chosen, Shang Tsung can morph into any character, but most morphs cause gameplay to pause momentarily while the game loads the data for that character. When "off" is chosen (the default setting), Shang Tsung cannot morph into any character, even his opponent. | ||

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is a Sega Saturn fighting game developed by Point of View.

Story
Weary of continuous losses in tournament battle, Shao Kahn, who lost to Liu Kang in the Outworld tournament in the previous game, enacts a 10,000-year-old plan.
Gameplay
Mortal Kombat Trilogy features a similar basic gameplay system and the same story as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but it adds characters and stages restored from Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II.
Many characters gained additional special moves.
Characters move with and and crouch with . They jump with and flip back and forth with and . All characters have punches and kicks that can either be aimed high or low. Characters perform a low punch with , a high punch with , a low kick with , and a high kick with . Characters can run by holding ; they can only run forwards. The Run meter is drained both by running and by performing combos, but the meter replenishes quickly if not used for a second. Characters block by holding . Blocking can be done while standing or crouching. Some attacks cannot be blocked while standing (such as sweeps). All attacks do a small amount of damage even when blocked.
Most characters have two Fatalities, an Animality, a Friendship, a Babality, and a Brutality.
Modes
In the main arcade mode, the player can choose any character.
There are also two multiplayer modes: a two-on-two mode and an eight-player tournament mode.
The game has five difficulty settings for computer-controlled opponents (Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, and Very Hard).
Characters
Note: Move lists assume that the character is facing right. When facing left, and should be reversed.
P | Any punch button |
LP | Low punch |
HP | High punch |
K | Any kick button |
LK | Low kick |
HK | High kick |
BL | Block |
RN | Run |
All characters can perform roundhouse kicks with + HK (which knock the opponent across the screen), leg sweeps with + LK (which cause the opponent to fall down), and uppercuts with + HP (which knock the opponent high into the air). Throws are performed by pressing LP when next to the opponent.
If the match goes to three rounds, players can offer defeated opponents Mercy as an alternative to a finishing move by pressing HOLD RN . This allows the other player to recover a sliver of health and continue fighting.
Fatalities often require being a certain distance from the opponent in order to execute. Each character has a special button combination for performing stage-specific Fatalities. Friendships and Babalities can only be performed if the player does not block during the final round. Animalities can only be performed if the player grants the opponent Mercy first.
Playable
All of the characters from the previous Mortal Kombat games return and are playable without cheat codes, including the boss characters. The boss characters cannot crouch, run, or use finishing moves (and finishing moves cannot be used against them).
Johnny Cage | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
A Hollywood actor who was killed by Shao Kahn's extermination squads during the Outworld invasion. When Outworld and the Earthrealm merged, his soul was merged back with his body, allowing him to rejoin his friends to fight for Earth's survival.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Noob Saibot | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A mysterious figure that emerged from the Netherrealm to spy on the battle between realms and report back to his leaders.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Baraka | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A warlord belonging to a race of nomadic mutants living in the wastelands of Outworld. He returns to fight for Shao Kahn in his invasion of Earth.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Cyrax | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Unit LK-4D4, the second of three prototype cybernetic ninjas built by the Lin Kuei. Like the other cyborgs, he has been programmed to find and terminate the rogue ninja Sub-Zero.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sonya Blade | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A special forces soldier who disappeared after the first tournament. She was rescued by Jax, and the two prepare for Shao Kahn's invasion after failing to convince the government of the threat. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Rayden | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A mystical thunder god and Earth's sworn protector. He transforms himself into a mortal warrior to fight on Earth again.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Rain | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A ninja who was born in Kitana's former world of Edenia and smuggled away as a small child. He resurfaced thousands of years later in the service of his captor Shao Kahn.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shang Tsung | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shao Kahn's lead sorcerer. Despite his multiple failures trying to deliver Earth to his master Shao Kahn, the scheming sorcerer has convinced Kahn to grant him more power than ever before.
As in previous games, Shang Tsung can morph into any other character and use their moves, but morphs must be enabled in the options before they can be used. When "off" is chosen (the default setting), Shang Tsung cannot morph into any character, even his opponent.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kitana | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A princess of the realm of Edenia. After killing Mileena, Kitana is accused of treason. She now attempts to reach Queen Sindel to warn her of their true past.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kano | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A criminal thought to have been killed in the first tournament. He convinces Shao Kahn to spare his soul before the Outworld invasion, proposing to teach Kahn's warriors how to use Earth's weapons. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Scorpion | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Scorpion escapes from Earth's hell after Shao Kahn's failed attempt at stealing the souls of Earthrealm. He eventually joins the struggle against Outworld.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sub-Zero | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A ninja, once a member of the Liu Kuei clan. He is now hunted by cybernetic assassins from his former clan after escaping their betrayal. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Smoke (Human) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
An assassin working for the Lin Kuei who was captured and turned into a cyborg. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Reptile | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A reptilian creature who takes the form of a human ninja. As one of Shao Kahn's most trusted servants, Reptile assists Jade in the hunt for Kitana, but he has secret orders to kill her if necessary.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Jax (Major Jackson Briggs) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A special forces soldier. He fitted both of his arms with bionic implants in preparation for the impending Outworld invasion.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mileena | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A grotesque clone of Kitana. After she was killed by Kitana, Mileena was brought back to life by Shao Kahn to help him defeat Earth's warriors with her combat skills and a mind-reading connection to her sister. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sektor | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Unit LK-9T9, the first of three prototype cybernetic ninjas built by the Lin Kuei. He was once a human assassin but volunteered to be turned into a cyborg because of his loyalty to the clan.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Liu Kang | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Shaolin monk. As the Shaolin Champion, he finds himself the prime target of Shao Kahn's extermination squads.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Jade | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A close friend of the renegade princess Kitana. After Kitana killed her evil twin Mileena and escaped from Outworld to Earth, Jade was appointed by the emperor Shao Kahn to find and bring her back alive.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sheeva | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sindel's personal protector, chosen by Shao Kahn. She is a Shokan, like Goro and Kintaro.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kung Lao | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Shaolin monk. His plans to reform the White Lotus Society are disrupted by Shao Kahn's invasion. Alongside Liu Kang, he embarks on a journey to end Shao Kahn's treachery.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Smoke (Cyborg) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Unit LK-7T2, the last of three prototype cybernetic ninjas built by the Lin Kuei. Smoke was captured and turned into a cyborg while his friend Sub-Zero escaped.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Nightwolf | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Native American historian who uses his shaman magic to protect his tribe's land against the Outworld invasion. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sindel | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shao Kahn's wife and the Queen of Outworld before her death 10,000 years ago. She has been reborn on Earth. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ermac | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A mysterious warrior that exists as a life force of the souls of dead Outworld warriors in Shao Kahn's possession.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sub-Zero (Classic) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Lin Kuei ninja with cryogenic powers. Having been seemingly killed in the first game, Sub-Zero mysteriously returns to again attempt the assassination of Shang Tsung.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kurtis Stryker | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A riot control police officer and the lone survivor of a major city after Shao Kahn's invasion.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kabal | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
An unknown warrior who is kept alive by respirators. He is thought to be a survivor of an attack by Shao Kahn's extermination squads. He fights with two hook swords. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Goro | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A 2,000-year-old half-human, half-dragon with four arms and a massive stature. He was the penultimate boss of Mortal Kombat. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shao Kahn | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The evil Emperor of Outworld, who wishes to conquer Earthrealm by any means. He was the final boss of Mortal Kombat II and all versions of Mortal Kombat 3, including Trilogy. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Motaro | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Centaurian chosen by Shao Kahn to lead his extermination squads. He was the penultimate boss of all versions of Mortal Kombat 3, including Trilogy. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kintaro | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shao Kahn's four-armed bodyguard, sent by his race to avenge Goro's defeat. He was the penultimate boss of Mortal Kombat II. |

By pressing START when hovering over Rayden, Kano, Jax, or Kung Lao, "Klassic" versions of the characters can be selected[5]. Rayden and Kano use their sprites and movesets from the original Mortal Kombat, while Jax and Kung Lao use their sprites and movesets from Mortal Kombat II.
Stages
Almost all of the battle arenas that were featured in Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 are available in Mortal Kombat Trilogy, with the exception of the Hidden Portal and Noob's Dorfen stages from Mortal Kombat 3. Only four backgrounds from the original Mortal Kombat are featured (the Courtyard, Goro's Lair, the Pit, and the Pit Bottom).
Motaro is fought in the Balcony and Shao Kahn is fought in the Pit 3. The Pit, Dead Pool, Kombat Tomb, Subway, Bell Tower, and Pit 3 stages have stage-specific Fatalities. Four stages can be accessed by uppercutting an opponent through the ceiling of another stage: the Street is above the Subway, the Rooftop is above the Bank, the Balcony is above the Soul Chamber, and the Cave is above Scorpion's Lair.
History
Development
The game was originally started as an enhanced port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for the PlayStation, developed by Avalanche Software (who also developed the Mega Drive port of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3).
“ | When we [were] going to release Ultimate MK3 on consoles, it seemed odd to release it on the Playstation without doing something "special" for it. Since the PS1 had so much space (CD drive) we decided to include the MK1 and MK2 assets and call it MK Trilogy. Actors Ho Sung Pak (Liu Kang), Philip Ahn (Shang Tsung), Elizabeth Malecki (Sonya Blade), Katalin Zamiar (Kitana, Mileena, and Jade), and Dan Pesina (Johnny Cage and Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, and Smoke) all left Midway prior to the production of the game due to royalty disputes, so their respective roles were played by new actors. Carlos Pesina's original sprites were used for Rayden's gameplay, but Sal Divita's image was used for his versus screen picture.
The Sega Saturn port, handled by Point of View, is a direct port of the PlayStation version, released nearly a year later. It is said to be slightly inferior as it lacks many of the transparency effects and several voice samples. It is nonetheless a more complete version of the game than the Nintendo 64 version, which omitted many characters, stages, and animations and had lower quality audio due to the constraints of the cartridge format. Point of View also released a port of the game to Windows PCs three weeks after the release of the Saturn version.
Release
Mortal Kombat Trilogy saw many positive reviews, though has been criticised for its many glitches and extreme difficulty.
Like the previous games, Mortal Kombat Trilogy was banned in Germany. Most games in the series were unbanned in 2005 except this one.
