Destruction Derby (デストラクション・ダービー) is a racing game developed for the Sega Saturn by Reflections Interactive and published by Psygnosis in 1996. It was the first in the series, and went under a working title of Demolish 'Em Derby, being based on the real-life demolition derby sport.

Though advertised, the Saturn version of the game was not released in North America. This version was set to be published by Sega themselves, appearing at their booth at E3 1996 with a tentative release date of June[8][9] (later July[10]) 1996. It was set to be priced at $59.99[11]. The publishing rights were later transferred to THQ with plans of releasing by the end of March 1997[12] but this too did not materialise.

Gameplay

The game is notable for being one of the first to allow cars to receive damage when hit, affecting the handling and performance of the vehicle. There are two modes, racing and battle, each with a running commentary. The Saturn version of Destruction Derby runs at about half the speed of its PlayStation counterpart, has a lower draw distance and some collision detection issues, making it one of the lesser versions of the game.

As with Wipeout, Sega of America were fully aware that the graphics were inferior to the PlayStation[13], and planned to work directly with Psygnosis to "improve game quality and incorporate enhancements"[14]. Whether this occurred in Destruction Derby's case (given it wasn't released Stateside) is unknown.

History

Legacy

Destruction Derby arrived on the Saturn quite late; nearly a year after its PlayStation counterpart. As a result, its sequel, Destruction Derby 2 would be released for the PlayStation and Windows PCs just two months later. Plans for a Saturn version of Destruction Derby 2 were put in place but were ultimately scrapped.
