Mega Bomberman is a Sega Mega Drive game released in 1994 by Hudson Soft. Though marketed as a Mega Drive exclusive, it is actually a port of the TurbografX-16 title Bomberman '94 which was not released outside of Japan. Mega Bomberman was the only "traditional" Bomberman game to be released on the Mega Drive, compared to the five released on the Super Nintendo and the three released on the TurbografX-16.
Though well recieved at the time of release, the TurbografX-16 version, Bomberman '94 has much brighter graphics with more animation, which considering the TurbografX has weaker hardware, means that Mega Bomberman is a fairly poor conversion. Mega Bomberman was ultimately more successful than Bomberman '94 as it was not restricted to Japan.
A proof-of-concept build was released onto the internet which suggests that Hudson originally commissioned German developer Factor 5 (best known for the Turrican series) to originally develop the game. This build contains an eight-player battle game (something that would not be seen until many years later), but despite Hudson reportedly being impressed with the demo, they decided to scrap the project and focus on porting Bomberman '94 over.
