Gomez can find golf balls or swords and use them as weapons with C. He can swim or fly (with the Fezi-copter item) with BBBBB. He enters doorways with Up when standing in front of them. The same door can sometimes lead to a different place under different circumstances. He enters objects such as chimneys, pots, or book spines with Down when standing on top of them. He climbs ropes with Up and Down.

    Gomez starts the game with two health hearts. He loses a heart when he takes damage from an enemy or a hazard (unless he has the golf ball, sword, or running shoes items, in which case he loses the item effect instead of a heart). He can obtain up to three more health hearts by challenging the "Guardians of the Heart" (the Big Bird, the Sinister Centipedes, and the Shape-shifting Snowman), three optional bosses that award a health heart apiece when defeated. Gomez loses a life if he loses all of his hearts, and the game ends if Gomez loses all of his lives. It has unlimited continues, and the player is also given a password after defeating a boss for continuing the game at a later time.
