Story
Abigail Craven is scheming to obtain the Addams Family's secret wealth. She is aided by the Judge and the Addams' family attorney, Tully Alford, who takes control of the mansion. She also brainwashes Uncle Fester, who has just lost his memory, into helping her. Morticia Addams, Pugsley Addams, Wednesday Addams, and Granny go to the house to meet with Tully about the property, only to be kidnapped within it by Abigail. When Gomez Addams gets home, he finds the other family members gone and resolves to rescue them from Abigail Craven's sinister clutches.
Gameplay
The game is a side-scrolling platform game played as Addams Family patriarch Gomez Addams. To save his family, Gomez must run and jump through the Addams Family mansion, which is massive and populated with all manner of deadly traps and supernatural frights. The game is open-ended, with the player having the freedom to move around the indoor and outdoor areas of the mansion in any order. Most areas are accessed through the mansion's Hall of Stairs, which contains six doorways. Levels contain many hidden rooms, often accessed through invisible doors or platforms, by walking through walls, or by falling through pits. The goal of the game is to find and defeat the four bosses who are guarding the abducted members of the Addams Family: the Scientist guards Pugsley, the Grinning Goblin guards Wednesday, the Funky Fire-Dragon guards Granny, and the Wicked Witch guards Uncle Fester. After finding these four, Gomez must fight the Judge to rescue Morticia.
Gomez moves with and and ducks with . He slides slightly after moving. He jumps with . Most enemies can be defeated by jumping on top of their heads, but some of them are spiked and hurt Gomez instead if he jumps on them. Gomez bounces off enemies when he jumps on them, which can sometimes be used to reach higher places. It is sometimes necessary to activate a switch block (by jumping to hit it from under) to clear a path or make platforms appear in order to proceed. Enemies and items respawn continuously. Gomez can find golf balls or swords and use them as weapons with . He can swim or fly (with the Fezi-copter item) with . He enters doorways with when standing in front of them. The same door can sometimes lead to a different place under different circumstances. He enters objects such as chimneys, pots, or book spines with when standing on top of them. He climbs ropes with and .
Gomez starts the game with two health hearts. He loses a heart when he takes damage from an enemy or a hazard (unless he has the golf ball, sword, or running shoes items, in which case he loses the item effect instead of a heart). He can obtain up to three more health hearts by challenging the "Guardians of the Heart" (the Big Bird, the Sinister Centipedes, and the Shape-shifting Snowman), three optional bosses that award a health heart apiece when defeated. Gomez loses a life if he loses all of his hearts, and the game ends if Gomez loses all of his lives. It has unlimited continues, and the player is also given a password after defeating a boss for continuing the game at a later time.
