The Action Replay Plus is a cartridge for the Sega Saturn that adds various features while it is plugged in. The cartridge:
- enables the console to play games from all regions;
- can function as a 1 MB or a 4 MB expansion to the system’s RAM for more demanding games (instead of the RAM-only cartridges included with some of these games or sold separately);
- can store copies of saved games from the built-in memory (rather than being writable directly from games, as is the Saturn Backup Memory cartridge);
- offers, like many other products for various systems with the name “Action Replay”, the ability to activate cheats for various games;
- and, in its original incarnation, includes a communications port that enables one to link their Saturn to a PC for other purposes.
The cartridge has always been highly popular among Saturn fans for these reasons. It can still be purchased, as it appears to have been cloned and kept in production by sources who probably have little to no relation to the original manufacturer, one “EMS Industrial Ltd.” However, few to none(?) of these modern clones possess the communications port, making the original version with this connector much more rare and highly valued. Nonetheless, the circuitry apparently is still present, and the port can be added in via alterations to the cartridge [1].
