Personal life

Richard Stewart was born in El Paso, Texas on January 5, 1925 to Richard Davant Stewart Jr.[4][11][12] (son of Richard Davant Stewart Sr.[13][14][15] and Anne Caroline Hardy Stewart, both of Tyler, Alabama), a service station operator from Canutillo, Texas, and Mary Vermillion Stewart,[16][17][18] a schoolteacher (later Mary Vermillion Johnson[19][20], daughter of Dr. Henry Franklin Vermillion,[21][22][23][24][25] founder and first superintendent of the Southern Baptist Sanatorium[26][27][28][29][30] of El Paso, Texas and Ida Kate Gray Vermillion[31][32], both of Eastland, Texas) and his brothers were William Robert Stewart and Henry Vermillion Stewart, both of San Francisco, California and James Franklin Stewart[1][2][33], a rancher from Kelowna[34], British Columbia, Canada, who ran the Casorso, Bulman and Chilco ranches under the business name of Kelowna Ranch, Inc.[35] (incorporated on April 27, 1960[36] as Kelowna Ranches, Ltd.[37][38]), all descendants, through their father, of the Davant family, a Huguenot family who emigrated from England to Georgia in the 1700s.

Three of Richard Stewart's uncles, namely William Champneys Stewart IV[39], Judson Dunaway Stewart[39] and James Ogilvie Stewart Sr.[39][40], were well known distributors of petroleum produtcs in El Paso County. William Champneys Stewart IV owned the Humble Oil & Refining Company[39], Judson Dunaway Stewart owned the Service Oil Sales Company[41] and James Ogilvie Stewart Sr. owned the J. O. Stewart Oil Company[42][43]. His cousin, James Ogilvie Stewart Jr.[44] (son of James Ogilvie Stewart Sr.) was the founder of El Paso-based waste management company International Environmental Industries known as El Paso Disposal[45], acquired in 1999[46] by Roseville-based company Waste Connections.
