The game is a true sequel to the original Phantasy Star Online (unlike Phantasy Star Universe) however it takes features from all of the series, including Phantasy Star Portable 2. It features a brand new combat system similar to hack and slash games such as Devil May Cry and Bayonetta with the ability to run and climb on enemies ncludes a revamp of the Ranger combat playing more like third person shooters such as Lost Planet and the return of MAGs.
Multiple party quests are also a new addition to the game, with multiple parties grouping together to succeed in difficult challenges (like raids in MMORPGs)

Two days later Sega announced that having an active Premium Japanese Phantasy Star Universe account on certain dates would also allow users to also get a lottery code.
