Richard Stewart was born in El Paso, Texas on January 5, 1925 to Richard Davant Stewart Jr.[4][10][11] (son of Richard Davant Stewart[12][13] and Anne Caroline Hardy), a service station operator from Canutillo, and Mary Vermillion Stewart[14][15][16] (née Johnson[17], daughter of Dr. Henry Franklin Vermillion,[18][19][20][21][22] superintendent of the Southern Baptist Sanatorium[23][24][25] of, El Paso, and Ida Kate Gray Vermillion[26][27], both of Eastland, Texas) and his brothers were William Robert Stewart and Henry Vermillion Stewart, both of San Francisco, California and James Franklin Stewart[1][2][28], a rancher from Kelowna[29], British Columbia, Canada, who ran the Casorso, Bulman and Chilco ranches under the business name of Kelowna Ranch, Inc.[30] (incorporated on April 27, 1960[31] as Kelowna Ranches, Ltd.[32][33]), all descendants, through their father, of the Davant family, a Huguenot family who emigrated from England to Georgia in the 1700s.
