Personal life

Richard Stewart was born in El Paso, Texas on January 5, 1925 to Richard Davant Stewart Jr.[4][13][14] (son of Richard Davant Stewart Sr.[15][16][17] and Anne Caroline Hardy Stewart, both of Tyler, Alabama), a service station operator from Canutillo, Texas, and Mary Vermillion Stewart,[18][19][20] a schoolteacher (later Mary Vermillion Johnson[21][22], daughter of Dr. Henry Franklin Vermillion,[23][24][25][26][27] founder and first superintendent of the Southern Baptist Sanatorium[28][29][30][31][32] of El Paso, Texas and Ida Kate Gray Vermillion[33][34], both of Eastland, Texas) and his brothers were William Robert Stewart and Henry Vermillion Stewart, both of San Francisco, California and James Franklin Stewart[1][2][35], a rancher from Kelowna[36], British Columbia, Canada, who ran the Casorso, Bulman and Chilco ranches under the business name of Kelowna Ranch, Inc.[37] (incorporated on April 27, 1960[38] as Kelowna Ranches, Ltd.[39][40]), all descendants, through their father, of the Davant family, a Huguenot family who emigrated from England to Georgia in the 1700s.

Three of Richard Stewart's uncles, namely William Champneys Stewart IV[41], Judson Dunaway Stewart[41] and James Ogilvie Stewart Sr.[41][42], were well known distributors of petroleum produtcs in El Paso County. William Champneys Stewart IV owned the Humble Oil & Refining Company[41], Judson Dunaway Stewart owned the Service Oil Sales Company[43] and James Ogilvie Stewart Sr. owned the J. O. Stewart Oil Company[44][45]. His cousin, James Ogilvie Stewart Jr.[46] (son of James Ogilvie Stewart Sr.) was the founder of El Paso-based waste management company International Environmental Industries known as El Paso Disposal[47], acquired in 1999[48] by Roseville-based company Waste Connections.
