Final Zone, known as FZ Senki Axis (FZ戦記AXIS) in Japan, is a 1990 game by Wolf Team for the Sega Mega Drive and X68000. Awkwardly it is a sequel to Final Zone II (itself a sequel to a 1986 Japanese-only game called Final Zone), meaning it is the third in the Final Zone series, but only the second Final Zone game to be released in North America.

Story

The player assumes the role of Howard Bowie, the heroic soldier of the El Sharia Military Nation's foreign legion and commander of the unit known as "Team Undead." It is 100 years in the future and weapons of mass destruction have been banned from the field of war. Fighting is now done with the futuristic power armor known as the New Age Power-suit (NAP). Howard is assigned to use his K-19 Phantom NAP to infiltrate enemy territory to Point A-46K Bloody Axis and destroy the sole remaining weapon of mass destruction.

Gameplay

Weapon select

The game is a shooter with an isometric perspective where the player controls the NAP mech. The objective of each stage is to destroy a fixed number of targets before facing a boss. The NAP is moved with the D-pad; it engages "super-speed mode" by pressing any direction twice quickly. It fires its main weapon with A, which has unlimited ammunition and rapid-fire. It fires its secondary weapon with B, which has limited ammunition and does not have rapid-fire. The secondary weapon ammunition is indicated by red squares in the status display (with a square representing ten shots and a bar representing one shot). While firing either weapon, the NAP does not change the direction that it faces when it moves.

The player can open a menu to select the weapon load-out with C. In this menu, the primary weapon is selected with A and the secondary weapon is selected with B. The same weapon has different effects depending on whether it is used as primary or secondary. All other weapons are used as hit points; when the NAP is hit by an enemy, it loses the lowest weapon on the list. The player can reorder these weapons with C. When a secondary weapon runs out of ammunition, it is automatically moved to the end of the list and the next weapon is equipped in its position.

The NAP is destroyed if it runs out of hit points. The game can be continued from the beginning of the stage (or the beginning of the boss fight) as long as there are continues remaining.
