The Adventures of Batman & Robin is a Sega Mega-CD action driving game developed by Clockwork Tortoise. Based on the 1992 television show Batman: The Animated Series (after its retitling to The Adventures of Batman & Robin), it was first published in Brazil by Tec Toy in October 1995, and was later brought to the United States and Europe by Sega the following December. It is unrelated to the identically-named Sega Mega Drive and Sega Game Gear games.
Between levels, the story advances through animated cutscenes that were created specifically for the game. The animated cutscenes were produced by Warner Bros. Animation (with animation by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, which also animated some of the episodes of the original cartoon). Kevin Conroy (Batman), Loren Lester (Robin), Robert Hastings (Commissioner James Gordon), Robert Costanzo (Harvey Bullock), Diane Pershing (Poison Ivy), John Glover (the Riddler), Arleen Sorkin (Harley Quinn), Mark Hamill (the Joker), John Vernon (Rupert Thorne), and Ron Perlman (Clayface) all reprised their roles from the animated series. The animated segments (about seventeen minutes in total) in the video game are sometimes referred to as "The Lost Episode" of the series.
Story
Batman discovers that Poison Ivy is robbing the Gotham Federal Bank. After apprehending her, she informs him that Commissioner Gordon and Robin have been kidnapped. This starts Batman on a hunt for some of his greatest adversaries to free his partners and discover who is the ringleader for this nefarious scheme.
Gameplay
The gameplay consists of chase sequences with the Batmobile and (in the final stage) Batwing, similar to the driving segments of the Mega-CD version of Batman Returns. Both vehicles are equipped with weapons for attacking foes. Stages consist of multiple levels, which are timed; the time is replenished at the end of each level. Batman loses a life if he runs out of time or if his vehicle takes too much damage from enemies or from hitting obstacles.
The Batmobile is steered with and . accelerates and brakes. Tapping locks onto targets and tapping it again fires a Guided Missile. Holding fires a Smart Bombs. Guided Missiles and smart bombs have finite ammo, but ammo pick-ups are found in the levels. fires Mini-Rockets, which are weaker but have infinite supply. The Batmobile fires 10 Mini-Rockets before automatically reloading. Double-tapping and then holding initiates a Turbo Boost, which is sustained until the button is released or until it is depleted. Turbo Boosts are also limited and found in item pick-ups.
The Batwing is also steered with and . The vertical controls are inverted, as with many flight sims: dives and climbs. As with the Batmobile, fires Guided Missiles and Smart Bombs and fires Mini-Rockets. Holding accelerates.
