The game is a platforming game where the player helps a boy penguin deliver an egg (containing a flower) to a girl penguin. The penguin does this by rolling the egg and dropping it down platforms until it reaches the bottom of the level. The penguin can break the ice blocks forming the platforms to open a path for the egg, but if the egg falls too far, it breaks. There are 30 rounds. The latest round and any previously completed round can be accessed directly from the title screen; the player's progress is lost after turning the console off, but passwords are given every five rounds.

The penguin moves with Left and Right and jumps with C. He can push the egg in either direction by walking into it. The egg rolls out of the way if the penguin jumps on it. The penguin can break the platform in front of him with B, breaking a hole in the ice that he and the egg can pass through. Levels scroll vertically, but the screen only scrolls when the egg is moved; if the egg is not moved to force the screen to scroll, the penguin can fall through the bottom of the screen and reappear at the top.

If the egg falls more than three blocks downward, it breaks. A blinking bar under the egg shows this distance. If the penguin lands on the egg but there is no room for it to roll left or right, it breaks. The round must be restarted if the egg breaks (and the game ends if the player runs out of eggs). The penguin is knocked out if touched by an enemy or hazard but recovers after a moment without needing to restart the round.

The game adds some assistance options, accessed through a menu after pausing the game with  START :

  • Map: Allows the player to pan the level with Up and Down. Pressing any button exits the map and returns to the game.
  • Flag: Plants a flag that acts as a checkpoint where the penguin respawns if the egg breaks.
  • Undo: Takes back the last move (such digging through a platform).
  • Retry: Restarts the round (at the cost of an egg).

Blocks

Penguin Land MD, Blocks.png
Ice Block
These blocks make up the majority of the platforms in the game. The penguin can break these with B when standing on an adjacent block. They are the only blocks that can be broken.
Penguin Land MD, Blocks.png
Cracked Block
These blocks can be broken by rolling or dropping the egg on top of them, but they cannot be broken by the penguin.
Penguin Land MD, Blocks.png
Metal Block
These blocks cannot be broken or moved.
Penguin Land MD, Blocks.png
Magic Metal Block
These blocks grow in and shrink out of existence continuously.
Penguin Land MD, Blocks.png
Moving Platform
These blocks act as moving platforms.
Penguin Land MD, Blocks.png
Rock
The penguin can cause these blocks to fall by jumping at them from below with C or pecking at them from above with B when standing on an adjacent block. After falling, they can be pushed by moving into them.
Penguin Land MD, Blocks.png
Penguin Tube
The penguin can stand on top of one of these blocks, then pass through the block by pressing B.
Penguin Land MD, Blocks.png
Egg Tube
If an egg is sitting on one of these blocks, the penguin can pass the egg through the block by standing adjacent to it and pressing B.

Items

These items are hidden in some of the blocks and appear when the block is destroyed.

Penguin Land MD, Items.png
Heart
Awards 100, 200, or 300 bonus points.
Penguin Land MD, Items.png
Wing
Lets the penguin jump higher into the air. Normally, he can jump 3 squares up, but this item lets him jump 4 squares up for the rest of the round.
Penguin Land MD, Items.png
Iron Egg
Protects the egg so it can be dropped from a longer distance without breaking it. Normally, it can fall 3 squares down, but this item lets it fall 4 squares down for the rest of the round.
Penguin Land MD, Items.png
1-Up
Gives the penguin another egg (equivalent to an extra life).

Enemies

Penguin Land MD, Enemies.png
Gengou (ゲンゴウ)
Polar bears that attack both the penguin and the egg when they are nearby. If they back the egg into a corner or land on the egg, it breaks. Rocks can be dropped on or pushed into them to crush them.

Music and sound

Much like Osomatsu-kun Hachamecha Gekijou, Ikasuze! Koi no Doki Doki Penguin Land MD features a notably loud and abrasive soundtrack. Sega CS programmed the game's soundtrack knowing it would likely be played back using low-grade television speakers, which would "filter" the music into a more pleasant sound while retaining the additional volume. However, with the advent of improved speaker technology, the game's soundtrack has gained a reputation for requiring additional audio filtering for modern play.

History

In Sega of Japan's official software listing, the game is simply titled Doki Doki Penguin Land (どきどきペンギンランド).
