VM2 is a third-party VMU manufactured by Dreamware Enterprises and first released in Europe in October 2023.[1]

Blurb

The VM2 project aims in the total reproduction and upgrade of the original VMU for our beloved Dreamcast. The VMU was one of the greatest console's assets, but with many design flaws. Now, with the VM2, all of these flaws are eliminated giving the user an experience that truly feels like next-gen! Internally, the VM2 received a totally fresh design with modern electronics. Externally, it is upgraded and at the same time keeps the original looks & feels, as a tribute to the original VMU.

Features

The VM2 features a modern, backlit monochrome LCD at a higher screen resolution, and boasts an embedded high-capacity battery and USB-C port. Its internal storage is 128KB (200 blocks), and accepts Micro-SD cards for further storage. It can be charged either via the USB-C port or through a Dreamcast Controller, and a sleep mode activates after three minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life. Additionally, an exhaustive settings menu offers a number of tweaks to the end user, including the ability to switch between English and Japanese languages, manage the VMU2's storage, and more.[1]

In addition to supporting all the features of the original VMU, the VMU2 also adds support for custom minigames and beeper audio, and is also compatible with the Dreameye camera. It also supports streaming the accessory's LCD screen to a PC for live gameplay or recording. Dreamware Enterprises have announced future plans to update the VMU2's firmware with support for direct connections between VM2s and original VMUs.[1]

History

The VM2 began development in early 2022, with Dreamware launching a Indiegogo campaign to facilitate its manufacturing and sale. The campaign was successfully funded on October 8, 2022, and the accessories were delivered to customers in late October 2023.[1]
