Gynoug (ジノーグ), called Wings of Wor in the US, is a shoot-'em-up developed by NCS in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive. It was published by Masaya in Japan and Europe and DreamWorks in the US.

Story

The heavens are being attacked by the demons of Iccus, led by a being known only as the Destroyer. The angel Gynoug (Wor in the US version) must bring the fight to Iccus itself and put an end to the Destroyer's dark plans.

Gameplay

The game is a side-scrolling shoot-'em-up played as the flying angel Gynoug. The D-Pad moves Gynoug in any direction. His movement speed can be upgraded by collecting items. He fires his normal shot with B, which can be held for continuous fire. There are three different patterns for the normal shot, which can be changed by collecting items, and the attack power and size of the normal shot can be upgraded by finding items. Gynoug can also collect magic spells, six offensive and two defensive, and hold up to three them in reserve. Spells are cycled through with A and used with C. Spells drain a magic counter as they are used, and then they are removed from the spell inventory.

Gynoug loses a life when he takes damage from an enemy. He is resurrected in place after a moment but loses one level of his weapon power and size and returns to baseline speed after losing a life. The game ends if the player runs out of lives, but it can be continued from the beginning of the round if the player has credits remaining. The player is rewarded with an extra life for every 200,000 points earned.

Final Round
This round is a boss rush against empowered versions of previous bosses before facing the final boss.

History

When publisher DreamWorks brought Gynoug to the United States, they changed the game's name to "Wings of Wor", as well as commissioning renowned fantasy artist Boris Vallejo to create new cover artwork, in an attempt to give the title an epic fantasy feel (akin to Conan the Barbarian.)[14]
