Choplifter (チョップリフター) is a side-scrolling action game developed by Dan Gorlin for Brøderbund Software that was originally released for the Apple II computer in 1982. It was ported to, among many other systems, to the SG-1000 and Sega Master System and turned into a Sega System 2 arcade game.
Contents
Gameplay
The player controls a combat helicopter that must retrieve prisoners of war, trapped in enemy camps and then transport them back to the player's home base.
History
Legacy
In 1985, Sega remade Choplifter as an arcade game, being the first game developed for their System 2 hardware (although variants of the game were also produced that ran on the earlier System 1 hardware). The same year, Sega also released a My Card version of Choplifter for the SG-1000, while a cartridge version for the Sega Master System was later produced in 1986 for the North American and European markets.
Sega's 1992 System 32 arcade game Air Rescue features a similar premise and is considered something of a spiritual successor. A Choplifter III was later released for the Sega Game Gear in 1994 by a third-party publisher, unrelated to any of the first-party versions published by Sega.
