There are 16 positions. The player can choose to play warm-up laps with no competitors before starting the race. Each race is preceded by a preliminary race to determine the player's starting position. If the player crashes or retires early from the preliminary race, the player starts in the last position.

Unlike the previous game, Super Monaco GP II was not released in arcades or for any non-Sega console or computer.

At the time of release it was regarded as the most realistic racing experience on home video game consoles, and the fact that it was endorsed by Ayrton Senna meant the game was very popular. However, due to these celebrity endorsements, it is unlikely Super Monaco GP II will be re-released in the future without alterations.

Gameplay

The game is a racing game inspired by Formula One. The player controls an open-wheel Formula One race car from a first-person perspective from the driver's seat, with a rear-view mirror at the top of the screen. Like its predecessor, Super Monaco GP II lacks any official form of Formula One branding, so it has to invent its own teams and drivers (with the exception of Senna himself). It can be played by one player only. There are sixteen courses loosely based on the real-life tracks of the Formula One World Championship, plus three fantasy tracks exclusive to the Senna GP mode. It supports the XE-1 AP controller for analogue control.

The car steers with Left and Right. It accelerates with B and brakes with A. There are three transmission choices: automatic, 4-speed manual, or 7-speed manual. When equipped with a manual transmission, the transmission can be upshifted by pressing Down and downshifted by pressing Up. When using the automatic transmission, the transmission can still be downshifted by holding Down (but returns to automatic control when the button is released). A tachometer shows the engine speed so the player can identify the optimal time to shift. The manual transmissions have higher top speeds than the automatic.

Driving off the track or hitting an obstacle (including another racer) slows the car. The player may be retired from the race if the car sustains too much damage. In the World Championship mode, the player can take a pit stop to repair damage by pulling over and pressing C when the "Pit In" alert appears (near the end of each lap). The player can manually retire from any race by pausing the game with  START  and choosing to exit.

Senna GP

World Championship is the main mode. The player enters a name and nationality when starting the mode. It is a full season of races on all 16 courses in order. Each race consists of three laps on Beginner level and six laps on Master level. The competition is much more formidable on the Master level. The player is awarded points for finishing in the first six positions, and the winner of the series is the player with the most points after the final race. There is a battery backup that saves the player's progress to one of six save slots after a race is completed.

There are 16 positions. The player can choose to play warm-up laps with no competitors before starting the race. Each race is preceded by a preliminary race to determine the player's starting position. If the player crashes or retires early from the preliminary race, the player starts in the last position.

On each course, the player may be challenged by another racer (or may choose another racer to challenge). The challenger appears in a different color during the race. If the player successfully beats the rival, the player replaces him in his team and takes his car. Contrarily, poor performance may lead the player to be dropped by a team after a race, forcing the player to sign to another team with a slower car in order to continue the season. The drivers are arranged into five tiers, with Ayrton Senna occupying his own tier ("S"), racing for the fictional Team Madonna (in place of the real-life Team McLaren). It is necessary for the player to challenge other racers (or accept challenges) in order to acquire faster cars to remain competitive in the later races.

The Senna GP mode features quick races on three special tracks, each lasting for three laps and containing 15 competitors. As in the World Championship mode, the player completes a preliminary race to determine the starting position (or starts in the last position if the preliminary race is not successfully completed for whatever reason).

The Free Practice mode lets the player run practice laps on any course. Every course has commentary from Ayrton Senna containing information and advice. After choosing a course, the player chooses between Image Training and Free Run. Image Training is a race against 15 other drivers (with the player's starting position chosen by changing the Grid value) over one to six laps. Free Run lets the player run an unlimited number of laps, only ending when the player manually chooses to retire.

Courses

The Brazil, Canada, Great Britain, Belgium, Japan, and Australia courses can be played in rainy or dry conditions. The car handles worse on wet tracks. The weather conditions are chosen randomly in the World Championship mode (and can differ between the qualifying race and the actual race) but can be chosen manually in Image Training.
