With the exception of a few additional sequences for continuity purposes, ''Shenmue: The Movie'' offers nothing not seen in the original [[Sega Dreamcast]] release of ''Shenmue''. It most likely exists due to in an attempt to break even on the game's extremely high development costs, as well as bridge gaps between Xbox ''Shenmue II'' owners and the Dreamcast-exclusive prequel. The DVD contains a fourteen-minute bonus documentary about the development of ''Shenmue II''.

Shenmue: The Movie (シェンムー・ザ・ムービー) is a ninety-minute film comprising cutscenes (and gameplay footage from expert players) from Shenmue. It was shown in select Japanese venues across 2001.

With the exception of a few additional sequences for continuity purposes, Shenmue: The Movie offers little that isn't seen in the original Sega Dreamcast release of Shenmue. In its original form, all spoken dialogue was provided by the English voice cast (with Japanese subtitles), albeit in a higher audio quality than the game, and with some extra lines to provide context where necessary.

Shenmue: The Movie was created as a means to promote the Dreamcast release of Shenmue II, with pre-release footage of the sequel being included in the ending credits and in a separate trailer, believed to be shown (or at least released) alongside the movie. It had a very limited release, being shown just five times at different Japanese locations in January[4], then again in September 2001[5], before seeing a VHS and DVD release in the region.

DVD releases of the film came in both Japanese and English and contain a fourteen-minute bonus documentary about the development of Shenmue II.

Overseas, a DVD copy of Shenmue: The Movie was bundled with the Xbox port of Shenmue II starting in late 2002, conveniently retelling the events of the first game to Xbox owners, who unless they had previously bought Shenmue on the Dreamcast, had no means of seeing this content.
