Road Blaster FX (ロードブラスターFX), known in the United States as Road Avenger, is a Sega Mega-CD full-motion video driving game developed by Wolf Team. First published in Japan by Wolf Team in December 1992, the game is a port of the developer's titular 1985 arcade game Road Blaster.

Wolf Team later developed and published a 1995 Sega Mega LD port titled Road Blaster, known in the United States as Road Prosecutor.

Gameplay

Road Blaster sees players drive through 9 levels, represented by full motion video by Japanese animation studio (studio). When presented with certain situations, players are prompted to either turn left or right, accelerate, or brake. Failing to do so results in crashing the car, and having to begin that segment of gameplay again.

History

The original arcade game runs on LaserDisc-based hardware and is a full-motion video based game consisting of quick-time events. At the time, no home systems could run Road Blaster without external hardware; while Sharp X1 and Microsoft MSX ports arrived in Japan in 1986, they required an external VHD player to function. Soon, the newly-invented compact disc began to integrate itself further into home electronics, and with the advent of CD-based video game systems like the Sega Mega-CD, Road Blaster was able to be brought to the mass market.

Road Blaster's arcade release employs an analog stick which measures turning speed. In the home versions, this feature is removed due to the digital nature of D-pads.

Legacy

Road Blaster FX was bundled with Cobra Command in the Sega Saturn game Thunder Storm & Road Blaster, and later saw an Apple iOS port developed by gmode, the company which bought Data East's intellectual property following its bankruptcy.

Versions

Mega-CD version
