Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind is a Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo platform game released by Accolade in 1993. It is the first in the Bubsy the Bobcat series, and was released at the height of the "mascot wars" in which company mascots like Mario and Sonic were starring in popular video games.

Bubsy was created by Michael Berlyn, and during production was hyped up to be "the next Sonic the Hedgehog" only to receive mixed reviews from critics. It did, however, spawn a number of sequels including Bubsy II, and a pilot was made for a cartoon series featuring the character.

Story

Enemy aliens called "Woolies" intend to steal Earth's supply of yarn balls. Since Bubsy has the world's largest collection of yarn balls, he has the most at stake and sets out to stop the Woolies and reclaim the yarn balls.

Gameplay

The game is side-scrolling platformer inspired by the Sonic the Hedgehog games. The player maneuvers Bubsy the Bobcat through the levels, jumping on Woolies and collecting yarn balls. Bubsy moves with Left and Right and crouches with Down. He jumps with A or B; he jumps much higher if he gets a running start. He defeats Woolies by jumping on top of them. While in the air, he can glide with A or "pounce" (bounce off enemies) with B. He can "super pounce" by pouncing on enemies while gliding, which sends him high into the air. He can look up by holding Up or look down by holding Down. The player can pan the camera with C+Left or C+Right. He enters passageways, which often lead to secret rooms, by pressing Up while standing in front of them.

Bubsy starts off with nine lives and loses a life if he touches an enemy, an enemy attack, or other hazard, if he falls in water, or if he falls from a great height. Levels are timed, so Bubsy also loses a life if time runs out. The game ends if he runs out of lives, but it can be continued as long as the player has continues remaining.
