Winter Challenge, also known as The Games: Winter Challenge is a Winter Olympics-esque sports game for the Sega Mega Drive. It was originally released without a license from Sega, however following the Sega v. Accolade lawsuit, the game was re-released with a license. It is a port of a DOS game of the same name, originally released in 1991.

Winter Challenge was followed by Summer Challenge in 1993.

Gameplay

Though it lacks any endorsement from the International Olympic Committee, Winter Challenge is thought to have been released to coincide with the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France. However, as the Mega Drive version of the game is virtually identical to its DOS counterpart, it is most likely based on events which occurred in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada.

Events

  • Downhill
  • Luge
  • Cross Country
  • Bobsled (two man)
  • Speed Skating
  • Giant Slalom
  • Biathlon
  • Ski Jump

Represented Nations

  • Austria
  • Canada
  • China
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Norway
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • USSR

Winter Challenge does not reflect the dissolution of the Soviet Union in late 1991, thus the USSR competes as a nation. In reality, former Soviet nations competed in both the Summer and Winter 1992 games under the "Unified Team" banner (under the Olympic Flag, which Accolade would not have the rights to use).

Production credits

  • Programming: Mike Benna, Jeff Sember
  • Art: John Boechler
  • Music: Alistair Hirst
  • Producer: Pam Levins
  • Developed By: MindSpan
