NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, LLC. (NBCユニバーサル・エンターテイメントジャパン合同会社) is a Japanese music, animation, and entertainment company and subsidiary of US conglomerate NBCUniversal.
The company has a long history, dating back to 1981 when it was formed as LaserDisc Corporation Co., Ltd. (株式会社レーザーディスク)[1], a branch of Pioneer tasked with manufacturing LaserDiscs, a role it would continue throughout the 1980s. In April 1989 its name would be changed to Pioneer LDC Co., Ltd. (株式会社パイオニア エル・ディー・シー)[1], and would begin to branch out into other forms of entertainment media such as music CDs and video games.
In October 2003 the company was sold to Dentsu, and so was renamed Geneon Entertainment Inc. (株式会社ジェネオン エンタテインメント)[1]. Dentsu would sell stake in the company in 2009 to Universal Pictures International Entertainment, causing a further name change to Geneon Universal Entertainment Japan, LLC. (合同会社ジェネオン・ユニバーサル・エンターテイメントジャパン). The company would adopt its current name in January 2016[3].
