Saturn Backup Memory
From Sega Retro
The Backup Memory cartridge for the Sega Saturn is the console's answer to the PlayStation's memory cards. Though the Saturn has some internal memory for save game slots, it is in short supply and is in danger of being wiped if the Saturn's internal clock battery runs out. Backup Memory cartridges are sixteen times bigger than this internal memory space.
There are some problems with this setup. For one, not all games support the peripheral (save games can be moved from the Saturn's internal memory to a backup memory cart, but this is only good for storage purposes - it cannot always be loaded directly off the card). Furthermore by any games that require a RAM cartridge in order to function obviously cannot use the Backup Memory cart too.
Saturn Backup Memory cartridges are not seen as wise purchases. Some Action Replay cartridges fullfil the main functions of one while also adding cheat code and freeloader capabilities.
