Shenmue I & II is a set of enhanced ports of Shenmue and Shenmue II for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam.

Gameplay

As the name suggests, Shenmue I & II contains ports of both Shenmue (1999) and Shenmue II (2001), both originally released for the Sega Dreamcast, updated for more modern hardware.

Both games render at a 1920x1080 screen resolution (though this can be increased on the PC) at 30FPS, and users are given a choice whether to play in a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, or a traditional 4:3 ratio as seen in the original Dreamcast versions of the game. A lower resolution mode, simulating the original 640x480 output is also available. Cutscenes are restricted to the 4:3 apsect ratio, likely due to complications that might arise from being able to see more on-screen.

Both English and Japanese dialogue options are available, albeit sampled at the same, relatively low quality as the original games. Loading times have been greatly improved, and the addition of anti-aliasing produces a cleaner image in game than their Dreamcast counterparts. Textures and geometry remain largely unchanged, however, and products that were once licensed (such as the Coca-Cola vending machines in the Japanese release of Shenmue) are replaced with fictional versions, similar to the Western ports of the day. Draw distance also remains the same as the original games, meaning object pop-in is perhaps more noticeable on bigger screens.

The original Shenmue benefits from the addition of a second analogue stick, allowing for greater control over the camera in that game. Shenmue II takes some features from its later Xbox port, such as improved water rendering and optional cinematic filters, but is also takes note of the original Dreamcast version, dropping the excessive motion blur in fight scenes. There are also a number of minor changes, such as the addition of bloom lighting, slightly warmer colours (which are no longer restricted by the 16-bit colour depths employed by the Dreamcast) and better texture filtering with elements such as clouds.
