Toxic Crusaders is a beat-'em-up game for the Sega Mega Drive based on the cartoon series of the same name (which itself is inspired, perhaps bizarrely, by the violent comedy horror movie The Toxic Avenger and its sequels). It was only released in North America.

Story

The Toxic Crusaders are a gang of misfit superheroes who combat pollution. They are trying to prevent the Smogulans, extraterrestrials who thrive on pollution, and their army, called the Radiation Rangers, from taking over the Earth.

Gameplay

The game is a belt-scrolling beat-'em up played as the Toxic Crusaders, a gang of environmentalist mutants who are trying to prevent the Smogulans from polluting the Earth. There are three playable characters, and the game can be played by one or two players simultaneously. The Toxic Crusaders make their way through each level, beating up enemies and occasionally riding vehicles such as skateboards or helicopters. They start in their hometown of Tromaville but travel to the planet Smogula to fight their ruler Czar Zosta.

The Toxic Crusaders move in any direction using the D-Pad. They jump by pressing C. They can curl into a ball and jump higher by pressing C again during a jump. They can fall through some platforms by pressing Down. They attack with a short-ranged attack by pressing A or a long-ranged attack by pressing B. The character only performs the long-ranged attack if there is an enemy at a distance but not too close; otherwise, the character does his short-ranged attack. The long-ranged attack can be done in midair. When enemies are defeated, they melt into puddles, which the characters clean up when they walk nearby. Characters can swing from some objects by pressing A after a jump.

In two-player games, the second player can jump onto Toxie's back. Then Toxie can throw the other character as a projectile attack by pressing B.

Each character has an energy bar that drains as they take damage from enemies. A character loses a life when the energy bar is drained (or from falling into a bottomless pit or water) but revives after a short delay if the player has extra lives left. The game ends if the player runs out of lives but can be continued a limited number of times. There are three difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, and Hard).

Characters

In one-player games, the player can choose any character. In two-player games, player one is always Toxie and player two can be NoZone or Junkyard.

Toxic Crusaders MD, Characters.png
Toxie
A janitor who was mutated by toxic waste, giving him a grotesque appearance and superhuman strength. He fights with a sentient mop and his blob-like companion Bloobie.
Toxic Crusaders MD, Characters.png
NoZone
A test pilot who crashed his plane into a silo of radioactive material after accidentally flying through the ozone layer, giving him a large, beak-like nose and the ability to sneeze hot blobs.
Toxic Crusaders MD, Characters.png
Junkyard
A humanoid dog who was formed when a homeless man and his dog took shelter in a kennel covered in toxic waste. They were merged into one being when the kennel was struck by lightning.
