History
Development
- Main article: 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker/Development.
The game was conceived by Kazuhiro Goji[30][31][32], a designer within Sega AM4, which was renamed Sega Mechatro earlier the same year 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker was released. The temporary title for the game was '18 WHEELER: PRO-TRUCKER ACROSS THE AMERICA[32][33], and the concept designs were created by Goji using Adobe Illustrator, and were written by Keiichi Matsunami, who at the time was not employed by Sega, instead at either Video System or Media Design & Art, but would later work for the game's 3rd known development team: Sega AM2 (known as Sega Software R&D Dept. 2 for much of 1999).
Various details about the development were revealed by Keiichi Matsunami on Twitter shortly after departing Sega in 2023. This includes driving the actual Route 99 to capture background visual reference[34][35], spending a lot of time adjusting his favourite moment in the game to make it funny, the beginning of stage 2[36][37], his body's experiences with the cabinet's vibration[38][39], being asked to remove vulgar enemy dialogue like "Stupid Jerk!" [40][41], getting a driver's license specifically to feel more comfortable developing the game[42] concept designs for the course[43][44][45] and [46] and Dreamcast-exclusive features[47][48].
Legacy
18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker was released exclusively to Japanese arcades in December 1999, the game was later ported to the Sega Dreamcast courtesy of developer CRI and publisher Sega the next year, with eventual PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube ports being released one year after that. The Sega Dreamcast version was planned to include online play[49], but the feature was ultimately scrapped before release.
In February 2002, Sega AM2 released a spiritual sequel, The King of Route 66. Sega Logistics Service announced it would end service on 18 Wheeler arcade machines on March 31, 2017.[50][51]
