Fantasia, called Fantasia: Mickey Mouse Magic (ファンタジア ミッキーマウス・マジック) in Japan, is a 1991 game by Infogrames for the Sega Mega Drive made as part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of Disney's 1940 film of the same name.

Story

While Mickey Mouse, the Sorcerer's Apprentice, is asleep and deep in a dream, the wind carries the notes of his master's music away. Mickey must search for the notes that have been scattered by the wind across the world of Fantasia.

Gameplay

The Sorcerer's Workshop

Fantasia, Orchestra.png

Orchestra

The game is a side-scrolling platformer played as the Sorcerer's Apprentice, Mickey. He can be moved with Left or Right or duck with Down. He jumps with C and can do a bounce attack by pressing Down while in the air. This allows him to defeat or bounce off enemies. Some enemies take multiple hits to defeat. Mickey also attacks by performing spells, which are projectile attacks that cost magic points. A casts a little spell that costs one magic point, and B casts a big spell that costs three magic points. Collecting Flying Spell Books recovers magic. In underwater sections, Mickey swims by holding C and pressing the D-pad in the desired direction. Mickey can cast spells while jumping or swimming.

Mickey begins in the Sorcerer's Workshop, where he can acquire health, magic, and points (though it is also filled with enemies that can harm him). In the Workshop, Mickey can find a door to the first world. The game's four worlds are based on amalgamations of the segments of Fantasia, each one themed around the elements. The goal of each world is to find the Notes or an equivalent amount of points. Mickey can find a Fantasy Fairy that sends him to another level within each world, which can help him find more Notes or accrue more points. The number of Notes or points required to advance to the next stage varies depending on the difficulty level:

World Easy Normal Hard
Water World 60,000 points (3 Notes) 100,000 points (5 Notes) 160,000 points (8 Notes)
Earth World 100,000 points (5 Notes) 140,000 points (7 Notes) 200,000 points (10 Notes)
Air World 140,000 points (7 Notes) 180,000 points (9 Notes) 240,000 points (12 Notes)
Fire World 180,000 points (9 Notes) 220,000 points (11 Notes) 280,000 points (14 Notes)

After the first world, Mickey returns to the Workshop. He must find a door to the Orchestra, where the Notes he found are added to the piece (a segment of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by Paul Dukas). If Mickey did not acquire enough Notes, the next door he finds returns him to the first world; otherwise, it progresses him to the next. In subsequent worlds, he visits the Orchestra upon completing the world rather than returning to the Workshop and either repeats the world or moves on to the next depending on his results.

Hidden platforms or items in the worlds are sometimes revealed by defeating an enemy or collecting an item. Both the Workshop and the worlds contain bonus rooms behind wooden doors with power-up items. Mickey exits these bonus rooms if he touches an enemy or collects all the items.

Mickey loses a hit point each time he takes damage from an enemy or an environmental hazard (including falling in water). Enemies likewise take damage if Mickey runs into them. Mickey can recover hit points by collecting Stars. If Mickey runs out of strength, he loses a life (called a "dream" in this game). If Mickey loses all of his lives, the game ends, but it can be continued as long as there are continues remaining.

Items

Mickey can collect items by touching them, including bouncing off them. He can also attack them with his magic spells, but he does not receive the benefit of the item in this case.

History

Development

The game began its development on January 1990 and the team was composed of 6 people who lacked experience in developing console games at that time.

Fantasia was rushed for release and poorly received at launch. Former Head of Product Development at Sega of America, Ken Balthaser has said on record that he regrets releasing it in its current "unplayable" state[8].

The graphics were wonderful, and they really caught the mood. They did some really cool things with parallax scrolling in there, but again...hindsight's 20/20. I wish now that I would've just said no and sent it back for another two months or so, to tweak the gameplay. I think it could have been a really fantastic game if we had done that.

Ken Balthaser[8]

Release

Reportedly Roy Disney was unaware that Disney's licensing department had given Sega the rights to produce a Fantasia game[8]. Roy had promised his late uncle, Walt Disney, not to give out licenses for Fantasia, and having learnt of the news, requested that Sega of America pull all copies of the game from sale and destroy them. Sega were assured that this was the fault of Disney, and as well as being compensated for lost profits, were granted further licenses for Disney properties. In the end, all but 5000 copies of Fantasia were recalled by Sega of America and destroyed.

The game was on sale for roughly 100 days before being pulled[9].
