Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, known as Castle of Illusion: Fushigi no Oshiro Daibouken or I Love Mickey Mouse: Fushigi no Oshiro Daibouken (アイラブミッキーマウス ふしぎのお城大冒険) in Japan. is a platform game developed by Sega R&D 6 for the Sega Mega Drive. It was released alongside a slightly different Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear version around the same time.
Those who pre-ordered the 2013 remake on PlayStation 3 received a port of the original Mega Drive version by M2.[12]

Story
The witch Mizrabel has kidnapped and imprisoned Minnie to steal her youth. As he approaches the entrance of Mizrabel's castle, a mysterious old man appears and offers him assistance. Mickey is informed that he must defeat Mizrabel's henchmen, known as the Masters of Illusion, and their armies consisting of bizarre creatures such as enchanted mushrooms, toy soldiers, ball-juggling, unicycle-riding clowns, spiders, and armored knights. From them, Mickey must obtain the Seven Gems of the Rainbow, which will open up the route to witch's throne room.
Gameplay
Castle of Illusion is a side-scrolling platform game. Mickey can move with and and jump with . Mickey jumps higher if is held for longer. He can crouch with . Mickey can defeat enemies with a bounce attack by pressing or again whilst jumping. He can bounce upwards towards higher areas by continuing to hold until the enemy is hit. Mickey can also slide down slopes using his bounce attack. Mickey can also collect projectiles such as apples and marbles to throw at his opponents with or . There are various items that earn bonus points, increase the player's health and grant extra tries.
Mickey has a Power Gauge with five points, indicating his health. He loses one point each time he is hurt by an enemy or an environmental hazard, but he can find Stars within the levels that replenish his health. Mickey loses a try if he loses all of his health. Extra tries can be found in the levels or earned by accumulating points (40,000 points initially and then every subsequent 50,000 points). Mickey retains his health from stage or stage but loses all of his projectile items.
Every stage ends in a boss battle against each Master of Illusion where Mickey can earn a gem (though the final two levels award a gem halfway through). At the end of each stage, Mickey's score is totaled, including a Technical Bonus (the number of points left on his Power Gauge multiplied by 1,000) and a Secret Bonus (the number of projectile items remaining times 1,000). After clearing all five stages, obtaining all gems will open up the route to the witch's tower. There, the player faces the final boss: a giant and youthful version of Mizrabel (resembling the Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty). There is also an Practice mode available where players play through truncated versions of the first three levels, with no boss fights. However, it is only possible to finish the game and see the ending by playing the Normal or Hard modes.

History
Development
While the day-to-day development of Castle of Illusion was undertaken by Sega of Japan, the project was led by Sega of America and Disney Software in the US[13]. Disney had strict guidelines as to how Mickey Mouse could be treated; for example, he was not allowed to "die", thus Castle of Illusion has "tries" instead of "lives"[13] (a policy which continued when developing later Mickey Mouse games).
Legacy
Castle of Illusion stands as one of the first licensed exclusives for a Sega system, and was promoted heavily to sell consoles before the release of Sonic the Hedgehog. Its subsequent success meant it became the first in a series of Disney licensed games developed exclusively for Sega consoles, being followed by a sequel, World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, and two Master System/Game Gear spin-offs, Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Legend of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse.
The game was bundled with Quackshot later in the Mega Drive's life in The Disney Collection, and also appeared with this game in the Sega Saturn compilation, Sega Ages I Love Mickey Mouse: Fushigi no Oshiro Daibouken/I Love Donald Duck: Guruzia Ou no Hihou.
A remake of the game was released in 2013 developed by Sega Studios Australia called Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (2013). The original game was made available as a pre-order bonus on PlayStation Network in North America only.[12]
