One of SEGA's most loved development teams, Sonic Team took their name from their phenomenally successful Sonic the Hedgehog series. They were formerly known as SEGA AM8.
Naka left the group with ten other members of Sonic Team to establish an independent game developer, Prope.
History
In 1990 AM8 took on the task of developing Sonic the Hedgehog in 1990. It was around this time that the team took on the name Sonic Team. Key team members included Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara. In 1999 a US branch known as Sega Studio USA was formed. In this same year Naoto Ohshima, known as the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, left Sonic Team to form his own studio Artoon. In 2002 Hirokaza Yasuhara also left Sonic Team followed by Yuji Naka in 2006. Although it was thought that Yuji Naka's moving on to open his own development company, Prope, would restrict him from contributing to further Sega titles he has continued to work at Sega, likely due to the fact that Prope titles would also be distributed by Sega.
