The Electronic Entertainment Expo 1998 (E3 1998) was the fourth E3 event to take place.
Sega had a smaller presence at this E3 than in previous years, with much of the space being devoted to PC content. There are likely two reasons for this - the Sega Saturn was rapidly losing third-party support so there may not have been anything to show, and the expo opened its doors a week after the Sega New Challenge Conference, in which the Sega Dreamcast was announced. Interest in the aging, unpopular Saturn console, therefore, was minimal.
As the Dreamcast was 18 months away from its US launch (and with the exception of games such as D2, very few games had been shown in Japan) Sega chose not to showcase it at this E3. This allowed the event to be dominated by news from Nintendo and Sony, with hard hitters such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Tomb Raider III and Metal Gear Solid.
