The Sega Mega Drive version of Fantasy Zone is a port of the System 16 version of Fantasy Zone to the Sega Mega Drive. Programmed by Hideki "Hidecade" Konishi, who had previously developed the Mega Drive port of Darius, it was included on all models of the Mega Drive Mini 2 as a bonus game.

Gameplay

This version of Fantasy Zone aims to port the original System 16 game as faithfully as possible, however there are slightly fewer colours due to the Mega Drive hardware's limitations. In addition to the original arcade game as well as the Time Attack mode from other ports, there is a new "Super Easy" mode which adjusts gameplay to cater for casual play.

In "Super Easy", the player starts with $150,000 and has a life meter, allowing them to survive hits, with life restored by clearing each Round. Coins are magnetically attracted to Opa-Opa, and shop balloons appear more frequently and have no time limit.
