− | + | PAGENAME, known as World of Illusion: Fushigi na Magic Box or I Love Mickey and Donald: Fushigi na Magic Box (アイラブミッキー&ドナルド ふしぎなマジックボックス) in Japan, is a platform game that was released for the Sega Mega Drive. It is a spiritual sequel to Castle of Illusion and stars the Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

+ | Whilst preparing for a magical act, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck discover a magical box. This turns out to belong to an evil magician (Pete) who sends Mickey and Donald to a magical world. Now they must attempt to escape while learning a few magic tricks along the way, facing unknown creatures among other dangers.

− | Like its prequel, World of Illusion is a platform game. | + | Like its prequel, World of Illusion is a platform game. One player controls Mickey Mouse, while the other player controls Donald Duck (player order can be selected on the menu screen), both of whom can be on screen simultaneously. The game was built primarily for cooperative play, though both Mickey and Donald can be played separately in single-player and each have their own slightly different routes through the game. In two-player mode, some puzzles require cooperative action to be solved (for example, one character jumping on a seesaw to launch the other into the air, or jumping in tandem to move a mine cart). |
− | {{ | + | Characters walk with left and right. They run by holding A in combination with a direction. They jump with C and crawl with down+C (which lasts until C is released). Donald cannot fit through some of the tighter passages in the game and must be pulled through by Mickey or find another way. Characters attack using a magic cloak with B. They can cast spells at predetermined parts of levels with A, which is also used for cooperative actions such as dropping a rope to pull the other player up if they are left off-screen or pulling Donald through tight passages. One character can jump on another character's shoulders to reach higher platforms. |
− | + | Players start the game with three lives in a single-player game, known as tries in this game, and six in a co-op game. When a player runs out of health points (indicated by cards on the top of the screen) in a co-op game, the other player must touch them to revive them. If there is one try left in a co-op game, the surviving player can choose to continue the game in single-player mode, or share the final try with the other player. When the last try is lost, the game ends, and the players can either continue from the beginning of the stage or display a password to try again later.
− | === | + | The ability to jump on certain enemies and throw objects is not carried through from Castle of Illusion, although several similar level themes are explored across the five rounds. Likewise, there is virtually no connection to the Sega Game Gear titles Land of Illusion and Legend of Illusion which emerged in the years which followed, although all feature Mickey Mouse running and jumping in similar worlds. |

+ | |||
+ | The game opens with a huge forest full of tall trees and giant flowers, and even the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland making a cameo appearance at the beginning. Traveling alone, Mickey and Donald travel through different parts of the forest, while working together, the two enter a gemstone-filled mine with mine cart that they must operate by pressing down in tandem.
+ | |||
+ | All paths lead Mickey and Donald deeper into the caves, which are filled with spiders and webs, with a large spider serving as the boss, who can only be attacked while it is in the foreground.
+ | |||

}} | }} | ||
+ | |||
+ | The first area of this stage has the player(s) ride on a magic carpet through the sky. Pressing right will make the carpet move forward, and any of the face buttons will make the carpet rise. Skillful flying is needed to avoid the vultures and the tornadoes and collect items.
+ | |||
+ | Traveling alone, Mickey runs through a thunderstorm and past moving pillars and a falling ceiling, while Donald rides leaves across the rapids. Working together, the two climb a canyon together using teamwork. The third area has the player(s) jump across the clouds and walk across piano keys that will release items or bombs.
+ | |||
+ | The boss for this stage consists of six dragons that will come to life one by one and attack by jumping around and breathing fire. The player(s) must hit them once each to turn them back into stone.
+ | |||
+ | ====Underwater Adventure====
+ | | ||
+ | |||
+ | The main gimmick of this stage is that Mickey and Donald swim through the sea inside giant bubbles while avoiding tiger fish and luring clams into opening secret passages. Pressing any of the face buttons will make the bubble rise higher, and the player(s) will sink if no buttons are pressed.
+ | |||
+ | At the end of the first area is a small gap to pass under. Mickey can pass it just fine, but Donald will get stuck, requiring Mickey to pull him through. Both of them will be going through an unstable temple which ends with the two smashing through pillars with a chariot and having to escape before the ceiling crushes them. If Mickey enters alone, he will go through a different area that has him navigate an undersea cave. If Donald is alone, he will have to backtrack and take an alternate path on the surface, jumping across islands and rafts.
+ | |||
+ | Both characters eventually explore a sunken ship, which is filled with unstable floorboards, falling tridents, and a corridor in which the player(s) must run before it completely fills with water. At the end of the sunken ship is a boss fight against a shark, which is likely inspired by the shark chase scene from The Little Mermaid. The shark moves fast and is only vulnerable to attack when attacking.
+ | |||
+ | ====The Library==== | ||
+ | | ||
+ | |||
+ | Following on from the sunken ship in the previous stage, Mickey and Donald will find themselves jumping out of a fishbowl and in a giant library, much like the fourth stage of Castle of Illusion. Throughout the library are enemies themed after stationery, jars full of sugar cubes that the player(s) can fall into and explore, and magic boxes that will teleport them to other areas. Mickey and Donald traveling together will also enter a Christmas present and explore a Christmas-themed level, while Donald alone will enter a picture book where everything is made up of words.
+ | |||
+ | Just like its predecessor, the player(s) will be traveling through a cookie-themed area, this time by entering a cookie tin. When entering this area alone, Mickey will ride on a cork fired out of a champagne bottle into space, collecting items and avoiding burning stars. The boss of this stage is Madam Mim from The Sword in the Stone, who flies about on her broom and periodically landing to unleash a magic attack. The type of attack she uses is determined by the colour of her crystal ball.
+ | |||
+ | ====The Magic Box====
+ | | ||
+ | |||
+ | The mysterious box from the introduction sequence appears outside the cookie tin and transports Mickey and Donald to a land inspired by the Queen of Heart's castle from Alice in Wonderland. The first area has Mickey and Donald use magic spells to command card soldiers into serving as platforms. At the end, the player(s) must stand on dice to open the way forward. Only one of them actually opens the way; the rest either do nothing or send the player(s) back to earlier parts of the area.
+ | |||
+ | Traveling alone, Mickey will jump through a mirror and walk through a crazy hallway while avoiding falling chandeliers, flying tableware, and holes that suddenly appear in the floor, while Donald will have to navigate a multi-floor hedge maze and find the exit. In a co-op game, Mickey and Donald will find themselves in a room with multiple doors, and they must go through these doors and replay short sections of previous stages.
+ | |||
+ | Both characters will eventually delve deeper into the Magic Master's domain, jumping across holes, riding chariots over spikes, and fighting card soldiers, eventually reaching the Magic Master himself (who resembles Pete) for the final showdown. Mickey and Donald have to jump onto the platforms and attack his face to defeat him.

World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, known as World of Illusion: Fushigi na Magic Box or I Love Mickey and Donald: Fushigi na Magic Box (アイラブミッキー&ドナルド ふしぎなマジックボックス) in Japan, is a platform game that was released for the Sega Mega Drive. It is a spiritual sequel to Castle of Illusion and stars the Disney characters Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
Contents
Story
Whilst preparing for a magical act, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck discover a magical box. This turns out to belong to an evil magician (Pete) who sends Mickey and Donald to a magical world. Now they must attempt to escape while learning a few magic tricks along the way, facing unknown creatures among other dangers.
Gameplay
Like its prequel, World of Illusion is a platform game.
Characters walk with and . They run by holding in combination with a direction. They jump with and crawl with + (which lasts until is released). Donald cannot fit through some of the tighter passages in the game and must be pulled through by Mickey or find another way. Characters attack using a magic cloak with . They can cast spells at predetermined parts of levels with , which is also used for cooperative actions such as dropping a rope to pull the other player up if they are left off-screen or pulling Donald through tight passages. One character can jump on another character's shoulders to reach higher platforms.
Players start the game with three lives in a single-player game, known as tries in this game, and six in a co-op game.
The ability to jump on certain enemies and throw objects is not carried through from Castle of Illusion, although several similar level themes are explored across the five rounds. Likewise, there is virtually no connection to the Sega Game Gear titles Land of Illusion and Legend of Illusion which emerged in the years which followed, although all feature Mickey Mouse running and jumping in similar worlds.
The game's music, artwork, and animation show influences from numerous Disney animated films.

Stages
Enchanted Forest
|
The game opens with a huge forest full of tall trees and giant flowers, and even the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland making a cameo appearance at the beginning. Traveling alone, Mickey and Donald travel through different parts of the forest, while working together, the two enter a gemstone-filled mine with mine cart that they must operate by pressing in tandem.
All paths lead Mickey and Donald deeper into the caves, which are filled with spiders and webs, with a large spider serving as the boss, who can only be attacked while it is in the foreground.
Among the Clouds
|
The first area of this stage has the player(s) ride on a magic carpet through the sky. Pressing will make the carpet move forward, and any of the face buttons will make the carpet rise. Skillful flying is needed to avoid the vultures and the tornadoes and collect items.
Traveling alone, Mickey runs through a thunderstorm and past moving pillars and a falling ceiling, while Donald rides leaves across the rapids. Working together, the two climb a canyon together using teamwork. The third area has the player(s) jump across the clouds and walk across piano keys that will release items or bombs.
The boss for this stage consists of six dragons that will come to life one by one and attack by jumping around and breathing fire. The player(s) must hit them once each to turn them back into stone.
Underwater Adventure
|
The main gimmick of this stage is that Mickey and Donald swim through the sea inside giant bubbles while avoiding tiger fish and luring clams into opening secret passages. Pressing any of the face buttons will make the bubble rise higher, and the player(s) will sink if no buttons are pressed.
At the end of the first area is a small gap to pass under.
Both characters eventually explore a sunken ship, which is filled with unstable floorboards, falling tridents, and a corridor in which the player(s) must run before it completely fills with water. At the end of the sunken ship is a boss fight against a shark, which is likely inspired by the shark chase scene from The Little Mermaid. The shark moves fast and is only vulnerable to attack when attacking.
The Library
|
Following on from the sunken ship in the previous stage, Mickey and Donald will find themselves jumping out of a fishbowl and in a giant library, much like the fourth stage of Castle of Illusion.
Just like its predecessor, the player(s) will be traveling through a cookie-themed area, this time by entering a cookie tin.
The Magic Box
|
The mysterious box from the introduction sequence appears outside the cookie tin and transports Mickey and Donald to a land inspired by the Queen of Heart's castle from Alice in Wonderland. The first area has Mickey and Donald use magic spells to command card soldiers into serving as platforms. At the end, the player(s) must stand on dice to open the way forward. Only one of them actually opens the way; the rest either do nothing or send the player(s) back to earlier parts of the area.
Traveling alone, Mickey will jump through a mirror and walk through a crazy hallway while avoiding falling chandeliers, flying tableware, and holes that suddenly appear in the floor, while Donald will have to navigate a multi-floor hedge maze and find the exit. In a co-op game, Mickey and Donald will find themselves in a room with multiple doors, and they must go through these doors and replay short sections of previous stages.
Both characters will eventually delve deeper into the Magic Master's domain, jumping across holes, riding chariots over spikes, and fighting card soldiers, eventually reaching the Magic Master himself (who resembles Pete) for the final showdown. Mickey and Donald have to jump onto the platforms and attack his face to defeat him.
