Dreamcast DVD Player is an unreleased accessory for the Sega Dreamcast. As the name suggests, it would have allowed the console to play DVDs, keeping it competitive with the PlayStation 2.[1]
History
Sega stated throughout the lifetime of the Dreamcast that it would one day play DVDs, however aside from one showing of the unit, no information was ever released. It is even believed by some that the unit on show was simply a shell and did not function as a DVD player at the time.
In 2021, someone stated that the unit was initially working but fell and broke during the flight from Japan. It was the only prototype that looked like the end consumer model. [2]
DVD playback was originally planned for the Sega Dreamcast console itself, but development costs led Sega to go down the GD-ROM route, a decision which in retrospect seems to have contributed to the Dreamcast's cancellation.
