Shin Megami Tensei (真・女神転生) is a 1992 game originally released for the Super Famicom by Atlus, before being ported to the Sega Mega-CD by SIMS, among other systems. The Mega-CD version was only released in Japan.
Shin Megami Tensei is the third game in Atlus' Megami Tensei series, being a "remake" of the 1990 Famicom game Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II. The original 1987 Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei was based on a novel by Aya Nishitani, but with II onwards, Atlus would shape the franchise with its own ideas. Shin Megami Tensei can hence be seen as a beginning for the Atlus-led Megami Tensei media franchise, which continues to exist to this day.
