The Electronic Entertainment Expo 2001 (E3 2001) was the seventh E3 event to take place.

Sega had a closed booth at this E3, allowing members of the press to view the contents by appointment only.

According to the July, 2001 issue of Spanish magazine Revista Oficial Dreamcast[1], Sega (in the same press conference where Shenmue II Japanese release date was announced) announced that was working together with Sony on a Japan exclusive, cross-platform online service where Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, PC and even arcade users could connect, with the first game to support the service announced for release in August of that year (rumoured to be Derby Owners Club).
