QuackShot Starring Donald Duck, called QuackShot: I Love Donald Duck: Guruzia Ou no Hihou or just I Love Donald Duck: Guruzia Ou no Hihou (アイラブドナルドダック グルジア王の秘宝) in Japan, is a platform game released for the Sega Mega Drive in 1991. It is part of the series of Disney games Sega were allowed to publish for their console during the early 1990s.

Its 8-bit counterpart is The Lucky Dime Caper, released for the Sega Master System and Game Gear in the same year.

Story

While Donald is flipping through some books in Scrooge McDuck's library, a map falls out of a book relating to the treasure of King Garuzia, ruler of the Great Duck Kingdom in ancient times. The map leads to the location of the king's most prized possession, hidden in a secret place shortly before his death. Donald thinks this is his path to riches. Unfortunately, Big Bad Pete overhears and pursues Donald throughout the game hoping to steal the treasure.

Calling the airplane

QuackShot is a platform game in which the player controls Donald Duck, who travels across the world looking for treasure. Donald moves with Left and Right and crouches with Down. Holding A while moving makes Donald run. He jumps with C. He slides with Down+C, which lets him move through narrow passageways or slip under enemies. Up enters doorways when standing in front of them. Up climbs ladders and Down descends ladders.

Donald is equipped with three firearms: a Plunger Gun (stuns enemies), a Popcorn Shooter (spreadshot), and a Bubble Shot (can dissolve concrete and ice blocks in certain levels). He fires the weapon with B. He can fire while crouched with Down+B or fire directly upward with Up+B. He can also fire while jumping. The plunger gun has infinite ammunition but can only stun enemies; the other two weapons must be reloaded with item pick-ups. Later in the game, Donald acquires upgraded plungers that give him new capabilities.

Donald has a health bar with eight points, and he loses a point when he takes damage from an enemy. If he loses all of his health, he loses a life. He can replenish his health by collecting food items. He can also find extra lives and gains an extra life every 100,000 points.

The game is partially non-linear and requires backtracking at several points. Special tools like the above mentioned weapons or other items need to be collected and used in order to fully explore and clear levels. When Donald completes the first segment of a level, he usually requires a special item from another level to proceed to the next area. The player can pause the game with  START  to use special items or to call in the airplane if standing next to a flag beacon. The airplane is piloted by Donald's nephews Hewey, Dewey, and Louie and transports Donald to another level. When Donald returns to a level he has already visited, he restarts at the flag beacon rather than the beginning.

History

Release

Two versions of the game exist, with the later ROM being considerably larger than the former due to a large block of padding added in the middle for unknown reasons.[7]

Legacy

In Japan, QuackShot was bundled with Castle of Illusion in Sega Ages I Love Mickey Mouse: Fushigi no Oshiro Daibouken/I Love Donald Duck: Guruzia Ou no Hihou for the Sega Saturn. A compilation of the two was also available in the form of The Disney Collection.
