Role(s): Artist

Daisuke Tabayashi (田林 大輔) is a graphic designer and art director at Sega of Japan who joined in 1998. His first game was The Ocean Hunter and he has since worked on arcade games, home console games and mobile games. Other notable games include Sega Bass Fishing 2, the Valkyria Chronicles franchise (especially the first 3 games in the series) and the Phantasy Star franchise beginning with Phantasy Star Nova. Tabayashi also provided various artistic and educational services to WOW Entertainment and Sega (Shanghai) Software and has since also been involved with creating artwork for PR purposes, like with Bleach GC: Tasogare ni Mamieru Shinigami and Hero Bank.

Career

Daisuke Tabayashi joined Sega Enterprises in April 1998 and was assigned to AM R&D Dept.#1 (AM1 for short). The first game he worked on was The Ocean Hunter, creating background models. He continued to create background art for arcade games, but expanded his roles with Emergency Call Ambulance (character modeling and animation) and Sega Strike Fighter (weapon modeling and user interfaces). Interface designs became a staple of his work with future home console titles like Sega Bass Fishing 2 and Blood Will Tell: Tezuka Osamu's Dororo, and likely also extended to his 2D work on mobile games Best Soccer and Super Tennis[1].

In 2000, AM1 (then named Sega Software R&D Dept. 1) changed from an internal department into a subsidiary company named WOW Entertainment, and was in need of materials to further its corporate identity. It fell on Tabayashi to illustrate WOW's CI manuals and create its corporate logo[1]. Tabayashi also participated in WOW's collaborations with other companies: for Sony Computer Entertainment, Tabayashi created many of the same kinds of graphics as before in Finny the Fish & the Seven Waters[1]; for Sammy, Tabayashi created character models for their pachislot machine Tamao de Pon[1]; and for Sega Shanghai Studio, Tabayashi taught many of its new Chinese developers how to use the Autodesk Maya software to model characters and backgrounds[1] during the development of Altered Beast.

Edelweiss tank in Valkyria Chronicles

After Sega WOW was split into 3 development departments within Sega in 2004, Daisuke Tabayashi went with Global Entertainment R&D Dept. 2 (GE2 for short), helping out with background art and publicity for some of its Bleach games. His notable project and first as lead artist was Valkyria Chronicles, a game awarded praise for its artistic graphics[2][3] using the CANVAS system which Daisuke Tabayashi co-invented[4]. This was also the first game Daisuke Tabayashi created art for that was featured in a dedicated book, Valkyria Chronicles: Design Archive[5]. He fulfilled many more roles than before, establishing the worldview with his sketches and creating concept art for characters and backgrounds, as well as designing tanks and creating illustrations to be used for publicity[1].

After GE2 merged with GE3 to become CS R&D Dept.#3, would reprise all of the roles for the next 2 Valkyria Chronicles sequels, before taking on a more supervisory role beginning with Valkyria Duel, though he would be one of the few original VC developers to return for Valkyria Chronicles Remastered[6]. Instead, Tabayashi's next major project at CS3 was Phantasy Star Nova. Once more he established the world with extensive concept art and created art to be used for promoting the game, but he also created enemy weapons and made final adjustments to improve the quality of the game's models[1]. His work on the Phantasy Star series would continue as he created a variety of artwork for Phantasy Star Online 2. Daisuke Tabayashi also returned to mobile games by being the art director for The World End Eclipse, followed by creating artwork for Idola: Phantasy Star Saga. He also began to help out in some way with the Sega Ages series for Nintendo Switch after that.

Phantasy Star continues to be Tabayashi's primary focus with Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis.
