Software R&D Dept. #1 (第一ソフト研究開発部) was a short-lived division of Sega. Essentially a continuation of Sega AM1, the "AM" name was dropped when the AM (amusement) and CS (consumer) R&D divisions were merged. Software R&D #1 kept its number and most of its staff, being largely unchanged during this period, and made no changes were made from AM1 regarding management or approach to games[2].

Recent works the department boasted from the AM1 era included The House of the Dead, the Dynamite Baseball franchise and Sega Bass Fishing[2]. A new series to Soft R&D 1 was the Real Life Career/Sega Professional series, which began with Airline Pilots the last months of trading as AM1 and expanded with Brave Firefighters and Emergency Call Ambulance.

In 2000, it was spun-off into a new (wholly owned) development company, WOW Entertainment.
