Software R&D Dept. #3 (第三ソフト研究開発部) was a short-lived division of Sega. Essentially a continuation of Sega AM3, the "AM" name was dropped when the AM (amusement) and CS (consumer) R&D divisions were merged. Software R&D #3 kept its number and most of its staff, being largely unchanged during this period.
Headed by Hisao Oguchi, who had a background in game design, Soft R&D 3 was considered the department of free thinkers and unique game concepts[2]. Besides Cyber Troopers Virtual-On: Oratorio Tangram and a Dreamcast port of their most recent his Crazy Taxi, it did not rest on the laurels of its previous IP such as Last Bronx and Top Skater, but instead created new franchises with Jambo! Safari, Virtua Tennis, Touch de Uno! and Derby Owners Club.
In 2000, it was spun-off into a new (wholly owned) development company, Hitmaker.
