Sports Design R&D Dept.[1] (スポーツデザイン研究開発部)[2] was a division within Sega of Japan, within the New Entertainment R&D Div. alongside New Entertainment R&D Dept.[1]. It can be seen as a continuation of Smilebit, however it only focused on the sports games, while non-sports staff went on to New Entertainment R&D, as they had already migrated to its predecessor Amusement Vision in 2003. Sports Design R&D was also home to several developers previously associated with WOW Entertainment (renamed AM1 in this period).

Sports Design R&D dissolved into CS1 (the previous New Entertainment R&D) and CS2 in 2008.
