Wolverine: Adamantium Rage is a side-scrolling action game by Marvel Software and Teeny Weeny Games tying into the X-Men franchise. It was released for the Sega Mega Drive in 1994.

A Japanese version was planned and even dated for release on the 13th January 1995[5], but was cancelled.

Story

Wolverine Adamantium Rage, Introduction.png

Wolverine

Recalling how Weapon X and Professor Thornton experimented upon him, Wolverine resolves to discover the secrets of his past. In his quest, he travels through a Weapon X facility, and then to the mountains, fighting off several attackers. Professor X contacts Wolverine to warn him of danger, but he refuses the X-Men's help, intent on settling things himself.

Gameplay

The game is an action platformer played as the mutant Wolverine. Stages are usually large with multiple floors, and Wolverine often must find and activate switches to progress. Wolverine moves with Left and Right. He jumps with A; pressing A again after jumping performs a whirling attack, which extends the reach of Wolverine's jump. He crouches with Down. He rolls in the direction he is facing with Down+A or performs a pouncing attack with Down-left+A or Down-right+A. He kicks with B; pressing B twice quickly performs a roundhouse kick. He slashes using his claws with C or does a backhand slash with Up. He extends his claws in both directions for a two-way attack with B+C. He enters doorways and elevators with Up, climbs ladders with Up and Down, and climbs walls and trees using his claws with C after jumping onto them.

Wolverine's health is depicted as percentage in the top-left of the screen. His health recovers slowly over time because of his mutant healing power. He loses a life if he runs out of health, and the game ends if he runs out of lives. There are no continues, but there is a password system for continuing. Additionally, the android Elsie-Dee pursues Wolverine throughout each stage, shown as a bar in the bottom-right of the screen. She blows up and kills him if she catches him, acting as a timer for the stage.

Versions

Both PAL and NTSC version are on the same cartridge and can be accessed by modifying the system's region settings. Aside from the usual speed differences, they are identical.

Acclaim Entertainment commissioned a different version of the game for the Super NES, which was developed by Bits Studios and published under LJN branding. Both versions differ drastically in content and gameplay.
