He is best known as the sound director of the Virtual-On series and has also created the music for the first Virtua Cop title as well as both Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns. Alien 3: The Gun, which used the same gun controllers as Gunblade NY, is one of Koyama's earliest soundtracks.
Following his involvement with Yakuza 3, Koyama left Sega and has since worked for Asobimo and XFLAG.
Kentaro married in 1998,[3] taking on the surname Kobayashi (小林) and is credited as such from 1998 to 2001, then reverting to Koyama after divorce.[2] Whether or not he was married to fellow sound team member Chiho Kobayashi is unknown.

History
Career
Kentaro Koyama's first project after joining Sega in 1992 was composing some songs for the Mega Drive game Honoo no Toukyuuji Dodge Danpei.[4] He would soon after join the arcade sound team, his first game being the medal game Bingo Party for AM4. Composing the gun-based shooting game Alien 3: The Gun for AM1 led to him working mostly on shooters for the next few years, those being the large attraction Virtual Shooting by AM5 and the video game Virtua Cop by AM2.
Post-1995, Koyama exclusively began to work with AM3 and created some of his best-known, melodically rich soundtracks: Cyber Troopers Virtual-On, spawning one of the most iconic arcade fighting game of the 90's, and Gunblade NY, which extended the Virtual-On style but evolved into a unique breakbeat sound for the sequel L.A. Machineguns. While he mostly worked solo on his soundtracks for the first few years, he often worked with newcomer Yuko Iseki in the late 90's on further Virtual-On games and Jambo! Safari. Koyama and Iseki both graduated from Shobi Gakuen University, but did not overlap in the years they attended the school.[2]
The Virtual-On series continued until Cyber Troopers Virtual-On: Marz in 2003, being relegated to crossovers and ports, so Koyama took on different projects, such as the Sammy-published pachinko machine CR Waiwai Bingo, racing game Sega Rally 2006, and Virtua Tennis 3 (though this soundtrack heavily reused music from the unreleased game Propeller Arena: Aviation Battle Championship. In 2007, Koyama and Hiroshi Kawaguchi mainly supervised the soundtracks for games such as Dinosaur King and Sega Superstars Tennis.
Koyama's final known work with Sega is the writing the unrest theme "Entrance to the Chaos" for Yakuza 3. By 2011, Koyama had left Sega to join an unspecified mobile game developer.[5] He has since worked for Asobimo (e.g. Puchitto! Chronicle -Online-, Toram Online) and XFLAG (e.g. Monster League, Fight League).
