==Story==
The plot concerns Sketch Turner, a cartoonist that during an unusual thunderstorm, becomes trapped in his own comic book while Mortus, the villain of his story, is flung out of it. Inside the comic book, he meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes he's a superhero that came to save their post-apocalyptic world from the evil. In the real world, Mortus would literally draw new villains on the pages of the comic book, trying to kill Sketch Turner, and so obtaining his "real" body to conquer the real world with.

 +
Sketch Turner, a "starving artist" and freelance rock musician living in New York City, is working on his newest comic book, Comix Zone. It is the story of the New World Empire's attempt to defend Earth from an invasion of alien renegades, with inspiration coming from Sketch's oddly vivid dreams and nightmares. One night, while Sketch is working on Comix Zone during a thunderstorm, a lightning bolt strikes a panel of his comic. In this instant, its main villain, a powerful mutant named Mortus, escapes the comic book's pages, desiring to kill Sketch so he can become flesh and blood and take over the real world. Because he does not possess any power in reality, Mortus sends Sketch into the world of his own comic, freely drawing in enemies attempting to kill him.

Sketch Turner would have to battle his way through the pages, his only help being his pet rat Roadkill, who got electrocuted during this thunderstorm, enabling him to zap enemies.
+
Inside the comic book, Sketch meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes he is "the chosen one" who came to save their post-apocalyptic world from the evil of Mortus and the alien invaders. Ignoring Sketch's protests, Alissa sends him on his mission, keeping in touch with instructions and hints via radio. It is up to Sketch to stop Mortus's evil plans and find a way out of this comic world.

==Gameplay==

==Gameplay==
{{A}} punches and {{B}} jumps, with combinations of {{A}}, {{B}}, and the D-pad doing different moves. With a 3-button controller {{C}} selects an item from the inventory, which is then used with {{A}}; with a 6-button controller the action performed with {{C}} can be customized in the options menu. {{X}}, {{Y}} and {{Z}} use the first, second and third items from the inventory, respectively, as seen at the top-right of the screen.
+
The game is a beat-'em-up played in the pages of a comic book. Sketch must make his way through three episodes, each consisting of two pages. In order to progress through the pages, Sketch often has to either successfully solve a puzzle or defeat all the enemies within that panel. Arrows then appear, allowing Sketch to jump to another panel. Some areas offer multiple routes, which eventually converge to the same path. He moves with {{left}} and {{right}} and ducks with {{down}}. He can roll on the ground with {{down}}{{left}} or {{down}}{{right}}, to fit under tight passages. He jumps with {{B}} and attacks with {{A}}. The attack button can be combined with the D-pad to perform a variety of moves, such as an uppercut with {{up}}+{{A}}, a sweep kick with {{down}}+{{A}} or a whirlwind jump kick with {{B}} then {{A}}. If he lands three successive hits on an enemy, he performs a special move. The game automatically blocks for the player if Sketch is not moving or attacking. He can push objects by standing beside them and pressing {{left}} or {{right}}. He grabs pipes and ledges with {{up}} when in front of them. He can flip switches with {{A}} when in arm's reach of them. Sketch can also tear off the backdrop into a paper plane to throw at enemies by holding {{A}}, which costs health.
 +

 +
Sketch can carry up to three items in his inventory. Items include explosives that can harm enemies or destroy obstructions or a drink that replenishes his health. His pet rat Roadkill can discover hidden items and access areas that are too dangerous for Sketch to reach. With a standard control pad, the player cycles through the item inventory with {{C}}; once an item is selected, it can be used with {{A}}. With a [[Six Button Control Pad (Mega Drive)|Six Button Control Pad]], {{X}}, {{Y}}, and {{Z}} use the first, second, and third items from the inventory respectively (as seen at the top-right of the screen). The action performed with {{C}} can be customized in the options menu; by default, it is used for manually blocking.
 +

 +
Sketch's health is indicated by a health bar, which is diminished as he is damaged by enemies or hazards. He also loses health when he attacks breakable objects (though this can often be avoided by using items). If Sketch loses all of his health, the game ends; there are no lives or continues. Sketch also dies instantly if he falls down a bottomless pit or gets caught on a burning page.

===Items===
 +
Sketch can pick up items by standing over them and pressing {{down}}.

    Comix Zone (コミックスゾーン) is a platform action game for the Sega Mega Drive. Play involves defeating enemies with punches, kicks, and holds, managing your inventory, and solving puzzles.

    The game's most remarkable feature is that it is set within the "panels" of a comic book. Each level consists of two "pages", and secrets are discovered by shredding the "paper" and revealing items. Dialogue is rendered within talk bubbles with the typical comic font. Sprites and backgrounds possess the bright colors and dynamic drawing style favored by superhero comics.

    Story

    Comix Zone, Introduction.png

    Introduction

    Gameplay

    The game is a beat-'em-up played in the pages of a comic book. Sketch must make his way through three episodes, each consisting of two pages. In order to progress through the pages, Sketch often has to either successfully solve a puzzle or defeat all the enemies within that panel. Arrows then appear, allowing Sketch to jump to another panel. Some areas offer multiple routes, which eventually converge to the same path. He moves with Left and Right and ducks with Down. He can roll on the ground with DownLeft or DownRight, to fit under tight passages. He jumps with B and attacks with A. The attack button can be combined with the D-pad to perform a variety of moves, such as an uppercut with Up+A, a sweep kick with Down+A or a whirlwind jump kick with B then A. If he lands three successive hits on an enemy, he performs a special move. The game automatically blocks for the player if Sketch is not moving or attacking. He can push objects by standing beside them and pressing Left or Right. He grabs pipes and ledges with Up when in front of them. He can flip switches with A when in arm's reach of them. Sketch can also tear off the backdrop into a paper plane to throw at enemies by holding A, which costs health.

    Sketch can carry up to three items in his inventory. Items include explosives that can harm enemies or destroy obstructions or a drink that replenishes his health. His pet rat Roadkill can discover hidden items and access areas that are too dangerous for Sketch to reach. With a standard control pad, the player cycles through the item inventory with C; once an item is selected, it can be used with A. With a Six Button Control Pad, X, Y, and Z use the first, second, and third items from the inventory respectively (as seen at the top-right of the screen). The action performed with C can be customized in the options menu; by default, it is used for manually blocking.

    Items

    Sketch can pick up items by standing over them and pressing Down.

    Roadkill
    Sketch's pet rat. His tail was electrified during the lightning storm, so he can attack some enemies by zapping them. Roadkill can be used to solve various puzzles in the game, including moving through spaces inaccessible to Sketch to reach flip switches. He can also sniff out and find hidden items or paths.
    Comix Zone, Items.png
    Iced Tea
    Heals Sketch for about half of his health meter.
    Comix Zone, Items.png
    Superhero
    Transforms Sketch into a superhero who destroys all enemies on screen before transforming back.
    Comix Zone, Items.png
    Knife
    Throws a knife, which can be used for flipping switches or setting off explosives from a distance.
    Comix Zone, Items.png
    Grenade
    Throws a grenade, which does heavy damage from a distance.
    Comix Zone, Items.png
    Bomb
    Sets explosives, which can be used to harm enemies or to destroy obstructions. The explosives detonate after a short duration, so Sketch must move out of the way quickly to avoid taking damage from them.
    Comix Zone, Items.png
    Surprise
    Gives Sketch a random item or potentially blows up and damages him.

    History

    Development

    Main article: Comix Zone/Development.

    Legacy

    The game is hidden within the Japanese version of Sonic Mega Collection and is locked part of all region versions of Sonic Mega Collection Plus, which is unlockable with having a Sonic Heroes gamesave, or is unlocked over time.

    Mega Drive and PC releases came with a bonus music CD, Roadkill, which contains vocal tracks of the 6 main tunes in the game. The music was performed by the band "Roadkill", which was lead by Howard Drossin.

    Comix Zone was ported to the Game Boy Advance and released in Europe in 2002.

    Sales of Comix Zone weren't as strong as expected[53], and while a team at STI moved south to set up a sister studio (which later became Luxoflux)[54], with plans to make a "Comix Zone 3D", nothing became of the project.
