Predator 2 is a Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System, and Sega Game Gear game made by Acclaim's "Grey Team" and Teeny Weeny Games based on the 1990 Predator 2 film.

Story

Predator 2 MD, Predator.png

Predator

The Predator is a technologically advanced extraterrestrial hunter that travels to other planets to hunt other species for sport. It arrives in Los Angeles in 1997 and begins hunting members of rival drug cartels. Disgruntled police officer Lieutenant Mike Harrigan is investigating the cartels and finds himself in the sights of the malevolent creature as well.

Gameplay

Mega Drive version

The game is an isometric shooter where the player takes the role of Lieutenant Harrigan, who must explore through various levels that are recreated scenes from the movie, rescuing tied up hostages from the clutches of the drug gangs. The Predator hunts the hostages; after all of the hostages are rescued, it hunts Harrigan. The Predator is invisible, but red markers show where it is moving. The player loses if too many hostages die. Arrows point the way to the next hostage that the Predator is targeting (or to the boss or exit if all hostages have been found). Paths are blocked and unblocked as hostages are rescued. After all of the hostages are found, Harrigan must fight a boss and then make his way to the exit.

Harrigan moves in any direction using the D-Pad. Hostages are rescued by touching them. He has a weapon that he fires in the direction that he is facing with A, or it can be fired in a fixed direction (allowing Harrigan to strafe targets) with B. Either can be held for continuous fire. Harrigan can fire while moving. He is initially armed with a handgun with unlimited ammunition. He can collect special weapons (which have limited rounds), which are a mix between conventional weaponry such as shotguns and bombs and Predator weapons such as Combisticks and Smart Discs. The player can cycle through the weapons with C. Special weapons can only be fired in the direction that Harrigan is facing, so the fixed shot always fires his handgun.

Harrigan has a flak jacket that can withstand a limited number of hits from enemies before he dies (shown as a meter in the bottom-left corner of the screen). If he loses a life, he restarts the level from a checkpoint (retaining any collected weapons and rescued hostages). The player gains an extra life for every 50,000 points accumulated. The game ends if Harrigan runs out of lives or if the Predator kills too many hostages. The number of killed hostages is shown as skulls in the top-right corner of the screen.

The game has three difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, and Hard), which affect the number of hostages that are allowed to be killed (4, 3, or 1) and the number of hit points for Harrigan's flak jacket (8, 6, or 4). There is a password system for continuing.

Versions

The Sega Mega Drive version does not reveal the name of the developer, though he left a string message (along with his name) in the game's binary for hackers to find.[15]

The Master System and Game Gear versions mostly feature side-scrolling levels. The Game Gear version of the game runs in the system's Master System compatibility mode.[16]
