Super Hang-On (スーパーハングオン) is a 1987 Sega Hang-On hardware arcade motorcycle driving game developed by Studio 128, and the successor to their previous 1985 hit Hang-On.
The game was ported to the Sega Mega Drive by Sega Enterprises, Ltd. in 1989. This home version was further adapted for use with Mega-Tech System arcade hardware.

Gameplay
Being a successor to Hang-On, the objective and controls of the game are the same. To race passing checkpoints and not letting the time run out while avoiding other racers or going off track. In addition to having an accelerator and brake (mapped to and respectively in the Mega Drive version), the player has a dedicated turbo button (its own button on arcade hardware, in the Mega Drive version) that can be held when the motorcycle has reached its maximum speed of 280km/h to go even faster to 324km/h, though at the risk of being harder to steer around sharper turns.
The main difference in gameplay is that the player has 4 tracks to race on, each one having a different number of checkpoints, but in total, each stage is roughly half the length of a stage in the original Hang-On. Africa is the easiest and shortest out of the four courses (6 stages). Asia is the second easiest and is similar in length to the course from the original Hang-On at 10 stages long. The Americas is the second to toughest course, containing 14 stages and Europe is the hardest course, being 18 stages long.
When the player starts a race, they have their choice of 4 songs that will play during the race, a feature borrowed from OutRun. Also unlike the original game, the road is not completely flat, with gradual inclines and declines to both vary the scenery and hide transitions that occur every 2 stages.
Original Mode
The Sega Mega Drive version of Super Hang-On features an "Original Mode" in addition to the regular Arcade Mode. In this mode, the player will race against rivals with the objective of defeating the rivals to earn prize money. By defeating rivals five times, the player will advance in rank and gain a better sponsor as well as face tougher rivals, though losing to a rival five times will lower the player's rank with no benefits.
Unlike the Arcade Mode, this mode requires the player to maintain their motorcycle as it will gradually wear down over time or from collisions and accidents, damaging its parts and necessitating the purchase of replacement parts using prize money. If certain parts get too damaged, the motorcycle's performance will be reduced or the player will be forced to retire from a race. If the player does not have enough money to replace a severely damaged vital part, they will not be able to race at all, but can still earn small amounts of money by repeatedly starting races and retiring at the starting line until they are able to buy the replacement part they need and continue racing.
To help with maintenance, the player will also have a mechanic to give advice on which parts need to be replaced, and better mechanics can be hired using prize money. The higher the asking price for mechanics, the better their results are in mechanical skills, parts longevity and reliability of advice. The player's progress in this mode can be saved via password, which is displayed by choosing to end the game on the menu screen.
Parts
Frame | |
---|---|
The better quality the frame, the better the motorcycle's turning will be. Falling off the motorcycle or colliding with other motorcycles will cause damage. If the frame takes too much damage, the player will retire from the race.

Engine | |
Wears down over time. If it becomes too damaged, the player will retire from the race.
| |
Brakes | |
These wear down over time and take significant damage from crashes, reducing the motorcycle's ability to stop quickly.
| |
Muffler | |
Takes damage from crashes and colliding with other motorcycles, reducing the motorcycle's acceleration.
| |
Oil | |
Helps the engine run smoothly and increase acceleration. If it becomes too damaged, the player will retire from the race.
| |
Tires | |
These wear down over time, reducing the motorcycle's grip on the road. If they become too damaged, the player will retire from the race.

History
Legacy
The most common version of Super Hang-On is the Sega Mega Drive version released in 1989. This version was released early on in the console's lifespan and appeared in several Mega Drive compilations namely Mega Games I, Mega Games 6, Mega Games 6 Vol. 2, Mega Games 10 and 6-Pak. A near perfect port of the game was released for the X68000 computer in Japan in the same year.
Super Hang-On also appeared as part of Sega Smash Pack 2 for PCs and Sega Arcade Gallery for the Game Boy Advance. In later years, the arcade version has been released as part of Sega Vintage Collection: Alex Kidd & Co., and on the Nintendo 3DS as 3D Super Hang-On, with stereoscopic 3D and widescreen support.
Super Hang-On was altered and released as a full deluxe simulated-motorcycle cabinet later as Limited Edition Hang-On in 1991.
Versions
While often thought to be a very close conversion, the Mega Drive version of Super Hang-On makes a number of cutbacks, with fewer opponents on-screen at any one time, each sharing fewer animations (for example, there are eight visible riders on the starting grid of the arcade version, while on the Mega drive there are only six). The Mega Drive version also features less scenery and operates at a slower frame rate (which is decreased further when too many objects are on-screen at once).
As with most conversions of super scaler games to home systems of the day, a lack of native sprite scaling means that for most ports of the game, sprites of differing sizes are substituted in where necessary. This leads to a choppier experience than the arcade version.
