The Mega Terminal (MEGA ターミナル) is a Japan-only accessory for the Sega Mega Drive. It is exceptionally rare and has not been widely documented. Like the Sega Mega Modem, the device connects to the back of a Mega Drive through the third DE-9 expansion port; consequently, it will only connect to a Model 1 Mega Drive.
The device can link up to an ISDN telephone line and transmit (or receive) data at a rate of 1200-2400bps. As ISDN lines only charged by the number of packets transmitted rather than the length of time connected it could often work out cheaper to use ISDN than a standard line. This was especially true in a game such as Go, which took a long time between moves, whilst transmitting little data. ISDN lines also allowed a telephone to still work whilst using the line for data, whereas a standard line would be tied up by the use of the Sega Mega Modem.
