Super Monkey Ball Deluxe (スーパーモンキーボール デラックス) is a game in the Super Monkey Ball series and the first to be released on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox platforms. It contains 114 levels from the Nintendo GameCube title Super Monkey Ball, 149 from Super Monkey Ball 2 and a further 47 exclusive levels. It also contains numerous other features (such as minigames) from the Arcade/GameCube titles.
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe has been released as part of both the PS2 "Greatest Hits" and Xbox "Platinum Hits" milestones.
Contents
Gameplay
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe plays much the same as its GameCube predecessors, though borrows more of its theming from Super Monkey Ball 2 than its prequel. In the main game, the objective is to guide your monkey to a goal by tilting a 3D stage within a set time limit. (Unsponsored) bananas can also be collected.
Story Mode
Similar to Super Monkey Ball 2, story mode is played across ten "Worlds", in which the player is given a set of stages (grouped roughly by difficulty) that can be completed in any order. There are more stages per World in Deluxe, than Super Monkey Ball 2, and the player only needs to complete ten of them to advance the story.
Challenge Mode
In Challenge Mode, the player is tasked with completing a set of stages in a defined sequence against the clock, similar to the arcade Monkey Ball. The player starts with three lives but can obtain more by collecting 100 bananas. Challenge mode contains almost all the stages in Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, although some are exclusive to World 10 in Story Mode.
Initially there are three difficulties; "Beginner" with 40 stages, "Advanced" with 70 stages and "Expert" with 100. If the player completes these challenges without using a continue, they will be presented with a set of "extra" stages to complete. Like Story Mode, most are lifted from Super Monkey Ball and Super Monkey Ball 2 on the GameCube (though some have alterations).
A "bonus" is presented every ten stages, in which the objective is to collect as many bananas as possible in the time limit. If the player fails, he/she does not lose a life.
Completing Expert in full unlocks the "Master" mode, containing the 20 hardest stages in the game (and a further 10 extra stages should they be completed without using a continue).
