OutRun 2 is an arcade racing game developed by Sega for Sega Chihiro hardware in 2003. It is a direct sequel to the original 1986 game OutRun, though is actually the seventh game in the series after Battle OutRun, Turbo OutRun, OutRun Europa, OutRunners and OutRun 2019.
The format is similar to the original OutRun but features more cars, more tracks and more music. As well as this, the graphics and sound have been completely re-worked and the game's engine has been replaced with one of a more modern standard. There are also more single player (and multiplayer) modes. It is also the first OutRun game with the permission to use real cars - though past games had used a car that looked similar to the Ferrari Testarossa, no licensing deal with Ferrari had been made. In OutRun 2 however, everything is perfectly legal.
Cars
The original arcade version of OutRun 2 features only eight cars, all from Ferrari - subsequent versions of the game would add more. The cars are split into four "classes" with different values for acceleration, handling and top speed. Template:Levels
Sequels and Re-releases
OutRun 2's legacy may be considered awkward - rather than make direct sequels, Sega AM2 made two upgrades, OutRun 2 SP in 2004 and OutRun 2 SP SDX in 2006. Both upgrades retain the features of OutRun 2, but add cars and tracks as well as other enhancements. Each are frequently confused with this game due to the similarities - comparisons can be drawn with the many upgrades Capcom gave to Street Fighter II in the early 1990s.
The standard OutRun 2 did not receive any home conversions, however OutRun 2 SP was brought to the PlayStation 2 in Japan very late in the console's lifespan in 2007. For the rest of the world, an enhanced adaption of OutRun 2 SP was brought to the Xbox by Sumo Digital in 2004/2005 under the confusing title of OutRun 2 (despite having many enhancements over this game). Sumo Digital would later bring yet another upgrade to home consoles as OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast in 2006, and would use the game as a basis for OutRun Online Arcade in 2009.
